Slugabed gifts us our 94th Truancy Volume. 2012 was a busy year for the Bath-born, London-based producer: his debut album, Time Team, was released on recently diversified label, Ninja Tune. Meanwhile, he was laying the foundations for Activia Benz, a label that coolly promotes the music of a splash of artists from around the globe. During our lengthy Skype conversation, we talked about composition, Internet culture, how hip-hop’s changed and ever-changing and the importance of visual art in music today.

Fais Le Beau is a Brussels-based DJ and co-founder of Gay Haze - the LGBTQ+ party series known for its hottest and longest day-to-night events in the city. Diego has spent over a decade playing on dancefloors across Belgium and Europe, performing at iconic festivals, parties, and venues including Horst Festival, Spielraum and Hamam nights to name just a few.  With a deep-rooted passion for House music, he blends tribal and progressive elements, skillfully building tension and releasing it into euphoric and nostalgic moments. 
Capturing many of the signature elements of his sound, this steamy mix is the perfect soundtrack for sweaty late-night dancefloors and sun-drenched morning afters. Infused with sultry grooves, hypnotic rhythms, and soaring melodies, it’s a journey through emotion and movement. Press play, let go, and get lost in the heat.

A queer icon steps up for RA.998's B-side.

The RA Podcast began with RA.001 in 2006. Since then, it's spotlighted the best and brightest in dance music every week, without fail. As we approach our 1,000th episode next month, we're switching things up, pairing artists whose sounds complement one another and, in doing so, zeroing in on the forces shaping the past, present and future of electronic culture.

This week, we shift lanes to Roza Terenzi and Kim Ann Foxman, two artists who strike a rare balance between reverence and reinvention. Both are key figures in queer clubbing circles, deeply informed by the halcyon days of '90s and early '00s club music yet fully committed to pushing it forward.

Each artist has carved out a distinct path. Roza Terenzi started out in Perth, Australia, before making a home in Berlin in 2020, while the Hawaii-born Foxman made her name in New York by way of San Francisco in the early '00s. For RA.998, they've contributed separate mixes, to be enjoyed together as two parts of the same whole.

Foxman takes the B-side and makes her RA Podcast debut. As a vocalist for Hercules & Love Affair and a sought-after producer in her own right, the New York-based artist blends club heft and melodic flourish with a distinct pop sensibility shaped by '90s dance music. (She got her first job making smoothies at an all-ages club in Hawaii while Deee-Lite performed live behind her.)

Like Roza Terenzi, Foxman draws from across eras. Her contribution to RA.998 is warm, expressive and emotionally tuned, unfurling a palette of house, breaks and trance laden with bright pads, bold hooks and an ear for atmosphere. Listen out for the Whitney Houston sample and you'll know what we mean. 

While Foxman and Roza Terenzi embrace a fun, vibrant musical style, their work is grounded in intentionality. They're invested in honouring the cultural and political roots of dance music: Foxman has long advocated for a more inclusive, community-driven club scene, while Roza Terenzi was among the first artists to begin pulling shows this summer as a matter of political principle.

Both sides of RA.998 show how the sounds of past eras can be reimagined to move seamlessly with the present. Hopefully you'll even feel a jolt of inspiration to get yourself to the nearest dance floor, ASAP.

Throughout this mix I wanted to keep things deep, rolling and groovy. I get things started with a tonne of my fav 90’s and 2000’s prog and then move into some newer sounds toward the end. Included of course my own track ‘Dream Realm’. Which dropped on Ryugu Records on the 18th of July. This mix i’d say is perfect to stick on at the afters or getting yourself ready for the night ahead. We're thrilled to be joined by the Belfast-born @aikamalmusic — a powerhouse producer, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and fierce entity behind the decks. Renowned for her striking fusion of tech-house and progressive trance, she’s been steadily carving out her place, playing alongside the likes of Peach, Spray and Chris Stussy and recently performing her debut Boiler Room at Belfast’s AVA festival, plus having self-released her debut track earlier this Summer. We’re stoked to have her on for our 77th edition in the series.

If you asked where this mix was recorded, I would say "Detroit" without hesitation and if I thought about it for a bit, I would guess that it was most likely one of Mike's legendary closing sets at No Way Back at Tangent Gallery. The level of care and reverence that go into these sets is very evident in this mix from start to finish. The track selection moves effortlessly from past to future playing with darkness and light, depth and joy, tension and release. It's a remarkable demonstration of taste and skill but also a paean to Mike's personal artistic history that calls to the creative power center that Detroit comprises. For Tapes #164, A for Alpha dives deep into a sound that has long lived in her record collection: dark, dubby, and hypnotically groovy tech house from the late 90s and early 00s.

Inspired by an inspiring summer at Love International, Houghton, and other spaces that celebrate deep listening and late-night movement, this mix is a love letter to the stripped-back, rolling energy of that era. Drawing on tracks from Nathan Coles, Terry Francis, Floorbangers, Tony Hewitt, SWAG, and seminal labels like Surreal, Wiggle, and Visitor, A for Alpha unearths a raw, tribal-tinged sound that still feels vital today.

It’s a personal journey, one that explores a side of her taste not always heard in the club, but deeply rooted in their identity as a DJ. Groovy, dark, and full of low-end weight.

Origins Tapes 164 - A for Alpha

This week's mix is by @bian_ca, a DJ based in Rio De Janeiro, a dedicated vinyl collector and resident at Nervosa, one of Rio’s key underground parties! His sets weave the sweat spot between techno and house, and he keeps it timeless and unexpected. 

The 100-minute mix is a journey where the tension stays exactly where it's supposed to be, shifting in genres and moods, and guides you to a grand finale, leaving you mesmerized. 

Track highlight:
‘’This selection is very special to me, as many of these tracks have been with me for a long time. It includes music from close friends I greatly admire, like Muta’s Poem by Capetini and Black Jesus by Vaskular (feat. Valesuchi). However, the track I’d like to highlight is In Sara, Mencken, Christ and Beethoven There Were Men and Women by Robert Ashley. I still remember hearing it for the first time, and it’s hard to believe it was produced in the ’70s. This was the first time I’ve had the chance to play it in a set, and I fall in love with it all over again every time.’’

Michelle emerged from the Uruguayan underground back in 2018. Since then, she's explored the sort of sounds that have made her homeland such a creative hotbed: stripped-back techno, electro and early tech house all collide in her tracks on the likes of My Own Jupiter, CABARET Recordings and, most recently, Element Of Impact. Though designed purely for dancing, they're rich with intriguing textural contrasts between steely metal surfaces, wonky acid lines and sultry synths.

Michelle only plays live, so this week’s mix is a raw, unfiltered one-hour transmission pulled straight from her machines. It’s a rugged ride that grinds through industrial tech, shadowy broken beats and deeper techno. The energy is relentless and the tension is palpable, as if intergalactic warfare lurks just out of sight. The pounding rhythms, strobe-lit grit and sweat-soaked intensity make this a masterclass in pressure and release that's alive, dangerous and keeps you right on the edge.
