Dr. Anderson (aka Corey "the animal" Anderson) is a child of 1990s California rave scene and desert breakbeat sound. He started collecting records and DJing in Berkeley, CA in 1998, at a time where good breakbeat vinyl was becoming difficult to find outside of Florida and the UK, but the west coast funky tribal groove was starting to thrive. He took the west coast tribal house and breaks sound to St. Louis in 1999 (where he was working on his PhD at WashU) and moonlighted as a DJ in the underground rave and club scene, where he is most well-known for his long-standing (2001-2006) residency at the legendary Upstairs Lounge. After completing his PhD, he moved to Tempe, AZ where he continued to DJ in Phoenix area clubs such as Myst. Eventually marriage, three children, and his career in the sciences put a serious pause on his DJing alter ego, exacerbated by a move for a professorship to Valdosta, GA, “where the extent of the electronic music scene was a brief dubstep night at Applebees (if that you gives you a sense of things)”. After a long torpor, Corey “the animal” Anderson finally re-emerged as Dr. Anderson in 2021 and moved to the now thriving St. Petersburg area of Florida in summer 2022 to re-launch his DJing career in a state that is focused on breakbeat music, at a time where electrobreaks are finally flowing again. Look out for his new “Breakbeat St. Pete” collective and innovative pop-up sunset parties (with DJ Bryan Van Vranken) in the Tampa Bay Area.
