Bside Incoming: Detroit in Effect

Well, well, well… this episode is a special one… we’re very pleased to mark the century with a legend.

It’s Detroit in Effect for our 100th Episode!

D.I.E have been electro royalty since the 90s, thriving in a city moulded by music: from local radio stations and musical communities, to Motown, Gospel and Parliament’s Funk, through to the pioneering hip-hop infused electronic music of the modern era.

So we’re flying you all out to Motor City to meet DJ Maaco from Detroit’s finest electro collective. We’re gonna take a little look into his record bag and pick out some of his all time favourite Bsides. While the first half reads like a Funky Hall of Fame, with Carl Carlton, Rick James and George Clinton, the second half tells us a little more about his D.I.E influences with electro legends like Cybotron, Egyptian Lover and Paul Hardcastle.

Since being introduced to electronic music back in the early 90’s, David has been hooked. At the age of 15 he started DJing and playing out at local underground events and raves around the Southern California area. You would’ve found him spinning various styles from house, acid, & techno to hardcore techno.

After a few years of DJing he then decided to learn to produce his own music, which landed him his first releases on labels such as Monoid, Stimulus, 4 Track & local label Droid Recordings. Since being associated with local event production group Droid Behavior in 2003, you can find him as a resident at the infamous Interface warehouse events as well as a regular producer for Droid Recordings. Over the years his music has gained worldwide attention and onto the playlists of many big players which eventually led him to gigs at some of the worlds biggest clubs including Berghain in Berlin and Fabric in London. He is also now regularly touring all over the world in Australia, Japan, Mexico, Canada, Central & South America, all throughout Europe and the U.S.A.

In early 2011 he started a project called ‘Truncate’ which focuses on the deeper, and more raw side of techno. His Truncate releases have been gain support from big players such as, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, DVS1, Luke Slater, Ben Sims, Modeselektor and many more.

With his heavy remix, production and touring schedule there is no slowing down in the near future for David as he continues to shape his own sound, putting Droid Behavior and Los Angeles on the techno map.

Awakenings Festivals have always been outstanding, and not only that amazing atmosphere, production, crowd, place and so on, also because it is highly emotional. It was not rare, that after a set I had to sit for a while to digest what was just happening and had a little water in my eyes, due to the overwhelming energy coming through. After being introduced to electronic music back in the early 90's in Los Angeles, a teenage David Flores was hooked. He started DJing across Southern California on the DIY warehouse, backyard, desert, and rave circuit. His style then was as varied as the local scene - a myriad of sounds ranging from house to acid to techno to hardcore. After a few years solely DJing, he began releasing original music under the monikers David F & Audio Injection, which landed him on labels such as Monoid, Stimulus, 4 Track & LA label Droid Recordings. His association with Droid Behavior began in 2003 as resident at the now defunct yet infamous and internationally acclaimed Interface event series alongside Drumcell and Raiz. He currently runs a new event series together with Drumcell and Oktaform named “Observe”.

In early 2011, he started the project Truncate to focus on the deeper, raw side of techno. His Truncate releases early on gained critical acclaim from world class underground talent such as Modeselektor, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, DVS1, Luke Slater, Ben Sims, Josh Wink, Eats Everything, Joris Voorn, and many more. Since then, he has provided remixes for artists across the musical spectrum including Kink, Slam, Loco Dice, Ben Sims, Josh Wink, Ellen Alien, Miss Kittin, Carl Cox & Nicole Moudaber. He has also released original works on 50 Weapons, Ultramajic, Blueprint, Ei8ht, Figure and of course his own imprint Truncate. He has also collaborated with Jimmy Edgar, Chambray and most recently started a new project with Ben Sims as ‘Assailants’ which they’ve released on their own imprint ‘Obscurity Is Infinite’.

A rigorous international tour schedule has since followed, including stops and regular appearances at the most prestigious venues and events, including Berghain in Berlin, Fabric in London, Concrete in Paris, The Movement Festival in Detroit, Womb in Tokyo, Dimensions Festival in Croatia, Awakenings in Amsterdam, Output in New York, and many more.

With his heavy remix, production and touring schedule there is still no slowing down for David. He continues to shape an evolving sound and to champion the Los Angeles underground.
