Ultima Thule is the specialist music mail-order and retail operation of the brothers Alan & Steve Freeman. We have been keen collectors of progressive and experimental music since the mid-1970s. Krautrock, electronics, and all sorts of weird stuff have been the staple of our obsession. It all grew as a hobby in the 1980s, as an independent outlet for our own music (brothers Alan & Steve Freeman) and our various projects (including Alto Stratus and ZBB), and Audion magazine.
After establishing our own cassette label, albums by friends, local talents, and other musicians soon followed. The focus of Auricle has been on making available music we personally like, promoting new talent (we introduced the world to Peter Frohmader, Robert Rich, Djam Karet, Tangle Edge, Ole Højer Hansen, Courtyard Moth and others) and unearthed classic lost albums by the likes of Günter Schickert and Asmus Tietchens.
This has been our ethic ever since, and it all blossomed when we established Ultima Thule in 1989, opening the Ultima Thule record shop in 1991. Since the late 1990s our own musical activities had a rebirth, with Endgame (our prolific electronic improvising band with over 100 releases, the return of Alto Stratus, new project Triax, and the now regular Quadelectronic: lots of videos on YouTube).
