The debut album from Spanish Gold, South of Nowhere, will be released May 27 on BMG/Del Mar Records. The trio is made up of drummer Patrick Hallahan (My Morning Jacket), guitarist Adrian Quesada (formerly of Grupo Fantasma) and guitarist and lead vocalist Dante Schwebel (City and Colour, formerly of Hacienda).

Rolling Stone recently premiered the album’s first single, “Out On The Street,” praising, “…every once in a while, you come across the real deal. Such is the case with Spanish Gold’s ‘Out on the Street,’ a heady number that slinks along like Rockwell’s ‘Somebody’s Watching Me,” trading in synth-goofiness for tight bursts of Black Keys guitar.” Texas Monthly calls the band, “…groovy and muscular—like a cross between the Black Keys and the Black Angels—with an undercurrent of sixties soul and early hip-hop.”

South of Nowhere was produced by the trio along with Collin Dupuis (JEFF the Brotherhood, Bombino) and was recorded by Dupuis at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville and at Lalaland in Louisville. Additional recording was done with Jim Eno (Spoon, Poliça) at Public Hi-Fi in Austin and Sam Patlove (The Octopus Project) at Big Orange in Austin.

Of making the new album, Schwebel comments, “We kept finding that we had a lot of the same reference points during the recording. It became evident that we were still children of the MTV era. We grew up with MTV when it was still a music channel. The way that the programming crossed genres from R&B to hip hop, rock, soul and pop music is how we approach records. It’s an album of all those styles. Like watching a random hour of MTV programming circa 1986-1996. It's a nod to Michael Jackson, Dr. Dre, Madonna, the Beastie Boys or Tom Petty, all with a Texas border town setting. It all adds up to a fun listen that you can keep on repeat.”

Following on from how much we enjoyed putting out the recent Fear of Men release, we have decided to make the flexizine (a 7” flexidisc record accompanied by a 20 page zine) a quarterly fixture. With no further ado, it gives us great pleasure to introduce issue 2. The new EP from Bournemouth based 5 piece The Death of Pop. 

Made up of three brothers and two cousins, The Death of Pop produce the sort of well-polished sound you’d expect from a tight knit family unit. We have long admired their jangley shoegaze from afar, but it was only when they sent us a lovely cassette demo did we finally make acquaintance. Opening track ‘Whenever’ picks up where excellent previous single ‘Sun in my Eyes’ left off. Dueling guitars, blissful summery melodies and a magic carpet ride of fuzz and distortion.

The EP’s further four tracks are testament to The Death of Pop’s ability to consistently craft jangle pop masterpieces that engulf you in a glowing warmth, which is basically the mark of any good shoegaze band. If it doesn’t feel like turning them up really loud would defrost a bag of peas from 50 yards, they’re probably not doing it right.

As previously mentioned, the EP is set to be released on a lovely blue transparent 7” flexidisc accompanied by a 20 page magazine. The flexidisc will feature the sub-6-minute drones of track 2 Mirage and a download code for the full EP will be included with the magazine. We have elected to release music in this format as we were getting a bit frustrated with the standard 7” release and realised we could be giving you a bit more for your money. 

The release is ltd to 250 copies and set to be released on the 28th July. You can pre-order your copy from our shop right now.

For Making Waves he composed Dawama, which means whirlpool or spiral of  water, or the large movements of water currents in the ocean. But it can also mean when the mind goes through an unsettling time. For Karim, this song reflects the physical and mental hardship that sailors go through in the race, while also referring to the sea.
