I'm working on sound design for a performance and installation by zack mennell at Dadafest in Liverpool next week. This is one of my favourites, and it fits well with this week's @naviar-records haiku challenge:

"out of the blue

Ōshima Ryōta was a Japanese poet of the Edo period. Some sources say he was a disciple of Yosa Buson, while others say his master was Hattori Ransetsu. He's mostly remembered for his essay “Bashō ku kai” 芭蕉句解 ('Study of Bashō's haiku') published in 1759, a magnum opus of his studies and literary theories on Matsuo Bashō's work.

I'm 417Hz A here and wanted to throw Matilda's tin whistle in but couldn't make it work and didn't want to pitch shift it... Then I remembered I wanted to try Bath Flutes in a song. Pitch is controlled and tun-able by adding and removing water. A great toy for teaching kids pitch recognition or if you're Randy Marsh use them in a song!.... 'Hey Shaaron. Come check this out.'

I've become addicted to drone. Again. I was the kid with his head on the piano, listening to the overtones die away, or pressing his ear to the steel hull of the ferry, enthralled by the sounds it created. I was the kid who formed wordless songs to accompany the sound of train wheels on a long journey, or hummed along with the fan on a hot day.

In the 60s I used to play my 45s on 16, or backwards, or by hand using razor blades as stylii.

I made cut-up tapes on a cheap cassette recorder in the 70s and experimented with reel-to-reel in the 80s.

I am not a musician. I am a scavenger of sounds. I use the most basic software to process those sounds, stretching and filtering until something emerges that makes a joyful noise. Or not...
