Widely regarded as one of the most important female haiku poets, Fukuda Chiyo-ni was a Japanese poet of the Edo period. She started writing haiku early in her childhood and was strongly influenced by Basho’s poetry (probably because her teachers were his students).

The fundamentals in Basho’s poetry include: sabi (detached loneliness), wabi (poverty of spirit), hosomi (slenderness, sparseness), shiori (tenderness), sokkyo (spontaneity), makoto (sincerity), fuga (elegance), karumi (simplicity), kyakkan byosha (objectivity), and shiZen to hitotsu ni naru (oneness with nature). Fukuda Chiyo-ni was particularly interested in the latter, since most of her poetry deals with the realm of nature.

I took a few seconds from something I was listening to and stretched it out to this length. Then it was duplicated. Using Sliding Stretch, one track was made to drop an octave over its length; the other to rise an octave. So, by the end they are 2 octaves apart. End of experiment  (with an enhanced mix of both tracks added and down-pitched an octave, of course).

Craig Lincoln is a poet who enjoys the challenge of writing in many forms of poetry. He is the author of two poetry collections: A Mind’s Eye View Come Talk With Me, and Dance Macabre.

His poems have been featured in writing magazines such as The Curious Record, Scope Magazine, Readers Carnival, and on various poetry sites he is a member of. He has also been featured in poetry anthology collections such as Change of Scenery, They Shall Not Grow Old, Northern Lights and Brio.

The Dogs of Death

When the Dogs of Death,
Hungry and feverish,
Pass through the walls of my room to devour my soul.
My soul still warm to have so hated the fetters from my past
I want these Dogs to sink their sharp and raging fangs
Into my too white calcified flesh
And eat away this stone turned soft by the cold acidity of my last thoughts
And when my vital fluids turn to tar sinking beneath my weary bed
I pray these great hounds with their empty, cruel eyes to devour this vile bitumen
That has fired my deepest regrets for being human,
Sensitive and suffering
From others and from myself.
And then, with the last bite I will remember that always
I would prefer cats.
When the Dogs Of Death
Will be well fed my soul tortuous
They will circle around my cold bed
Waiting for the coming
Of the rest of the Wild Hunting

Lying there
My corpse
Not rotten but already corrupted
Will slowly stiffen up
So fugitive remains of my mind
Will coil up like a centipede In a puddle of my brain
So in a hound howl
Will come the time of the Others
The failures, the hybrids
These almost dead not completely alive
Those who exist only marginally
Between two non worlds
They will ooze from walls,
Will sink under furniture,
Will arrive in herd
In waves, in troops
In heap of empty and starving
Members and eyes

They will surround my stiff, mineral and rocky corpse
And will drip on me,
Will try to breathe their void In what is not already anymore me.
Without memory, without words and without thoughts
They will remember that they too one day should have died
But that their master refused them the demise
They are now condemned to remain puddles of undead and non life
Without getting anything other than sand, silica dust and cold ashes
To complete their empty orbits

I've become addicted to drone. Again. I was the kid with his head on the piano, listening to the overtones die away, or pressing his ear to the steel hull of the ferry, enthralled by the sounds it created. I was the kid who formed wordless songs to accompany the sound of train wheels on a long journey, or hummed along with the fan on a hot day.

In the 60s I used to play my 45s on 16, or backwards, or by hand using razor blades as stylii.

I made cut-up tapes on a cheap cassette recorder in the 70s and experimented with reel-to-reel in the 80s.

I am not a musician. I am a scavenger of sounds. I use the most basic software to process those sounds, stretching and filtering until something emerges that makes a joyful noise. Or not...

Creating soundtracks for the movies in our minds. Fusing aspects of dark ambience, industrial beats and experimental self-sampled sound.
