Christian Nielsen has never been one for musical pigeonholes, but with his new 'Pull Up' EP on Pets Recordings, the Danish producer takes that ethos to its logical extreme. Two tracks. Two distinct moods. One cohesive, club-ready package.

Made not in some plush Berlin bunker but in the most democratic of studios - his kitchen, after the kids were asleep - the limited time and space, allowed Christian to focus on what really matters - the groove, the vibe, and making every sound count.

The title track, 'Pull Up', is pure peak-time propulsion: raw, rhythmic rap vocals locked tight to a driving, big room chassis, built for the kind of dancefloor moments when the energy shifts from simmer to boil. Flip it to 'Infinity', and the mood changes to melodic,   yet propulsive textures with a more a spacious arrangement that's designed for losing yourself.

'I wanted to create something that feels both nostalgic and fresh,' Nielsen says. 'The idea was to capture that spontaneous energy you get when unexpected elements collide in the right way.'

For Renaissance Man's first single off their Turbo debut LP, we've assembled a team of remixers whom we felt could live up to the playful intelligence of the original. The result is a pack befitting one of the best electronic albums of the year, a MENSA-level dissection of contemporary dance music that builds on the Finnish duo's previous releases on Dubsided, Sound Pellegrino and Made to Play.

 

To begin with, we enlisted a personal hero of the Renaissance Man boys - legendary producer Herbert - who offers up a subtle, atmospheric take, adding his own vocals and introducing an esoteric pop sensibility. Scottish producer (and Thom Yorke name-checkee) Sei A checks in with a hypnotic techno groove bomb. UK vet Paul Woolford strikes a balance between wobble acid and melodic piano hooks. Hot Turbo prospects Gingy & Bordello create a slow-burner that straddles the horse that rides between ambient and banger. Finally, we've also included an instrumental version that gives the track's unsung heroes - the instruments - a chance to shine.

Turbo Recordings was founded by Tiga in Montreal back in 1998. In addition to launching his own career, the label has been integral in the success of acts like Chromeo, Gesaffelstein, Duke Dumont and most recently, ANNA & Charlotte de Witte. Core talent includes ZZT (Tiga's collaboration with Zombie Nation), Jori Hulkkonen, BETON, Clouds, Harvard Bass, Pilo, Shaded, Dimitri Veimar and a host of new young producers in genres ranging from pure techno, electro, and house to pop. The list of artists who have released music on the label is a veritable 'who's who' of top-level talent spanning a broad musical range, and this, along with a commitment to beautiful design, has earned the label respect in the industry and a cult following among fans. 

“We started out singing into plastic bags and shipping them to stores as quickly as possible. Later, we discovered that vinyl sounds way better when delivered by kayak. I learned so much the first few years…Now, as I look towards the future, I can envision music for poor people, sonic odors for the hearing impaired, even MP3s for women....Vroom, sucka!” says Tiga, the lyrical lampsman lighting the way down Dance Avenue.
