Equal parts nostalgia and low-end dread, ‘Devour’ proves that electronic music can carry deep emotional weight without sacrificing impact. Rooted in the dubstep underground, this four-track EP is an intimate body of work that captures the latest evolution of @woventhorns’ sound - fusing the grit and atmospheres of noise, drone, industrial, and experimental influences with her emerging singer-songwriter sensibilities.

"Publicist is longtime musician/producer/performer Sebastian Thomson. He is mainly known as a founding member of post rock innovators Trans Am, though he now also plays in the progressive metal band Baroness and in the past was a member of Ian Svenonius' psychedelic punk outfit Weird War.

Publicist, however, is Sebastian's electronic music project. Because he is a studio musician and engineer trained in drums, guitar, bass, and keyboard, he approaches the music from a different perspective and uses almost no sampling. Publicist's studio tracks are produced using a combination of vintage and modern equipment, and take cues from the darker corners of acid house, new beat, and Detroit techno.

When presented with a young talent with his whole life and a brilliant career ahead of him, we at Twin Turbo feel the only morally acceptable thing to do is to get out of the way and minimize the risk of the least important promotional arm of the music business hindering the otherwise inevitable upswell of positive energy and unmitigated success that lay ahead. 

Tiga recently took to the BBC airwaves to declare ABSOLUTE. “a future star,” and we’re just going to leave it at that, rather than mention something the Twin Turbo label boss may have added about wanting to create an “animal blockchain” of up-and-coming talent. It’s simply not necessary. The London-based DJ/producer has earned support from Annie Mac, The Black Madonna and Erol Alkan, a veritable Influencer’s Row of venerated tastemakers. On a more personal level, when ABSOLUTE. was younger and owned only one deck, he used to beat match along to Pete Tong’s radio sets. That’s genuinely charming and relatable, and requires no further embellishment . He also espouses the virtues of a strong work ethic and open-mindedness, and in doing so gives us a glimpse of what dance culture could be like if we could simply erase the miserable baggage of anyone over 24. 

And the music? Oh, it’ll make you gotta dance all right.

The material featured on this EP was recorded in Berlin over the course of a legendary week-long exploit, the kind you read about at the movies. The music is a marriage of dark synth hooks and atmospheric sound design resulting from extensive Berghain-monitored brain damage. It is very fortunate that both artists were wearing their Twin Turbo friendship bracelets at the time or they may have never even gotten past the door.

In terms of raw intelligence, the top one percent of those reading of this will have picked up on the cues that these tracks are techno. The rest have nothing to feel bad about. Our hope is that both communities can work out their cognitive differences on the dance floor every night for the rest of their lives. Our business model depends on it.

Rekids offshoot Stranger in The Night welcomes renowned underground mainstay Fred P for an incredible release complete with his signature depth.

Fred P ended 2019 under his Black Jazz Consortium alias with an album full of the lush musicality and worldly deep house grooves he’s known best for. His own name is reserved for more driving, club focused sounds, however, and in the past, he’s released on Secretsundaze, Finale Sessions, Mule Musiq, his now defunct Soul People imprint, not to mention his more recently minted Perpetual Sound. Few can nail a groove as heavy and hypnotic as this Berlin-based New Yorker, and the four tracks here highlight that once more.

'Turn Up' is built on immovable kick drums that roll and roll beneath a dark nebula of synths and pads. There is the atmospheric feel of factory floor automation in the groove and it never lets up. The lush 'Alphabet City' is less heavy, with more bright and cosmic pads lighting up a track that is airy and filled with a subtle sense of funk. 'Construction' takes things late into the night once more, with an edgy lead that is unsettling and paranoid as it pans about over a rooted kick drum that will lock the floor into a state of hypnosis. 'For The Dome' closes this fantastically compelling release with jittery, percussive drums that are softened by celestial synth work. In harmony, they make for perfectly escapist listening.

This is irresistible dance floor dynamite for those who like it deep.

Turbo Recordings was founded by Tiga in Montreal back in 1998. In addition to launching his own career, the label has been integral in the success of acts like Chromeo, Gesaffelstein, Duke Dumont and most recently, ANNA & Charlotte de Witte. Core talent includes ZZT (Tiga's collaboration with Zombie Nation), Jori Hulkkonen, BETON, Clouds, Harvard Bass, Pilo, Shaded, Dimitri Veimar and a host of new young producers in genres ranging from pure techno, electro, and house to pop. The list of artists who have released music on the label is a veritable 'who's who' of top-level talent spanning a broad musical range, and this, along with a commitment to beautiful design, has earned the label respect in the industry and a cult following among fans. 

“We started out singing into plastic bags and shipping them to stores as quickly as possible. Later, we discovered that vinyl sounds way better when delivered by kayak. I learned so much the first few years…Now, as I look towards the future, I can envision music for poor people, sonic odors for the hearing impaired, even MP3s for women....Vroom, sucka!” says Tiga, the lyrical lampsman lighting the way down Dance Avenue.
