Token has been something of a mainstay for Inigo Kennedy ever since their very first release back in 2007. In the past eight years, we have seen a flurry of inspiring releases from the producer, each crafted with more finesse than the last. Last year, Token also saw the release of the Vaudeville LP. Here, Kennedy carved out a space in which to take on a more considered approach, thus allowing the experimental side of his sound to blossom. Clarion Call is Kennedy’s first release since 2014’s Vaudeville, returning to the EP format with poise. 
 
The EP itself covers wide sonic ground in a short amount of time. It opens with pads that swell to euphoric heights, before crashing into a jittering hyper-sequenced groove. ‘The Fold’ lumbers forward in an off-centre rhythmic direction, wrong-footing the beat at every turn. But yet, the kicks on ‘Kepler’ land on the eardrums like boxing gloves to the face. Each thump gives the right-hook-left-hook treatment to the stereo-field. By the end, Kennedy’s percussive workout has reached its climax, and the fragments that remain recede into the surroundings. 
 
Kennedy has a special talent for marrying earth-shattering dynamics with rapturous atmospheres. Where many producers whip up grandiose sci-fi soundscapes, Kennedy reels back to the dark and poignant. The result is an EP with sorrowful depth and technical power in equal measure. If this EP is a clarion call from Kennedy to his listeners, it is a call-to-arms to producers and club-goers alike. Kennedy reminds us: we should expect more from the dance-floor.

Lucid Interpretations - The Remix Album follows on from December's Lucid Reworks EP, a vinyl-only effort that featured two remixes by Marcel Dettmann, plus takes from Radioactive Man and The Exaltics. 

Three of those four tracks make it onto the new digital-only release, with Appleblim, Machine Woman, DeFeKT, Nastia, Or:la, 214, Shelley Parker and Broken Satellite also contributing. (Dettmann's "Negative Remix" of "No Such Location" was left off.)

Stroboscopic Artefacts is releasing its latest addition to the forward leaning edge of electronic music with the Totem series. Unfurling as a chain of transparent 10” vinyls, each of the Totem releases will have a subtly divergent take on the aesthetic space defined by techno and club culture. Totem continues investigations previously established by Stroboscopic Artefacts, namely the relation between sound and material object, spatiotemporality and the architecture of music. The series aims to collapse the artist, their intention and resonance with the public into one object, an artifact of beauty and functionality, the emblemized transparent 10-inch. In choosing a less common format for the Totem series, Stroboscopic Artefacts aims to reinforce the cognition that each of these pressings is a unique object, carrying a message that will develop as the record’s existence moves through space and time.

The productions of label-head, Lucy, aka Luca Mortellaro, will be the first pressed into the icy vinyl of the Totem series. The three-track EP, titled “Tarkomania”, is a circular meditation on specific musical and philosophic themes, and a warm invitation into Lucy’s famously nuanced sound processes. The A-side title track stakes out the sonic territory which the next two tracks will work within: an angular dance floor interlude, “Tarkomania”, builds dark hued mood and texture over one of the spilling monologues of Russian cult classic film director Tarkovsky’s in “Stalker”. The monolog is a probing search for meaning and inspiration within the creative process, a theme that Mortellaro was quick to establish at the beginning of the discourse that will accompany the duration of Totem. “Tarkomania Dub” on B1 takes the listener one circle deeper into the groove filled anxiety set forth in A1, flickering between a set of industrial sounds windows, anchored by the guttural voice of Takovsky’s writer and snippets of the warm and moody synth that accompany the listener throughout the EP. “Tarkomania Acapella” on B2 is a summation of these elements with an emphasis on the “Stalker” monolog. Greater than the sum of its parts, Lucy’s contribution to the Totem series is a succinct, if veiled and mysterious, investigation into the eternal questions that define the artistic process.

The material featured on this EP was recorded in Berlin over the course of a legendary week-long exploit, the kind you read about at the movies. The music is a marriage of dark synth hooks and atmospheric sound design resulting from extensive Berghain-monitored brain damage. It is very fortunate that both artists were wearing their Twin Turbo friendship bracelets at the time or they may have never even gotten past the door.

In terms of raw intelligence, the top one percent of those reading of this will have picked up on the cues that these tracks are techno. The rest have nothing to feel bad about. Our hope is that both communities can work out their cognitive differences on the dance floor every night for the rest of their lives. Our business model depends on it.
