For Week 4 of our 5 weeks of Pride colabs, we are in our home town of Berlin with Buttons. Today they bring us the second all vinyl set of the week with @shaunjwright

Shaun J. Wright grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago, falling in love with house music during their teenage years. While studying at Morehouse College in Atlanta, they honed their skills as a dancer in both the vogue ballroom scene and professional dance companies. After earning an MA in Fashion Curation from the London College of Fashion, they worked in fashion in New York City, where they met Andrew Butler of Hercules and Love Affair in 2008 and joined the group as a vocalist.

In 2012, Wright returned to Chicago to focus on their solo career, teaming up with DJ and producer Alinka to launch the Twirl label and party series. As a DJ, they’ve brought their sound – often laced with live vocals – to dance floors around the world, from Sydney to Berlin to their hometown, where they’re a resident at Smartbar.

This set was recorded at home using vinyl only, with a vocal outro from Aérea Negrot & Longopus added digitally. The tracklist was inspired by warm Sunday afternoons playing in the Garten at Buttons – sunny, soulful, and full of feeling.

For Week 4 of our 5 weeks of Pride colabs, we are in our home town of Berlin with Buttons. Opening this special week is their resident @alisonswing with an all-vinyl mix.

Alison Swing is a DJ with a natural, honest style shaped by her roots in the LA warehouse scene. As co-founder of Dig Deeper, her parties and sets helped shape a decade of underground dance music in downtown Los Angeles. Since relocating to Berlin seven years ago, she’s become a regular at some of the city’s most exciting events, including her debut at Panorama Bar and a residency at Buttons. With a warm, uplifting sound and a keen ear for tracks that connect, she’s played over 30 countries, bringing her joyful take on club music to dance floors around the world.

This mix was recorded at her flat in Kreuzberg on a sunny morning before the summer heat kicked in. It features a bunch of new records picked up during recent crate-digging trips to Japan, Mexico and New York. It’s a playful, sassy selection, full of the quirky energy that reminds her of Buttons – and the freedom to be completely herself on the dance floor.

Matt' Radio Slave' Edwards and Joel Martin's critically acclaimed Quiet Village project follow-up, 2024's 'Reunion' with the Vanessa Daou collaboration, 'Naked Hunger' on September 5th, '25.

'Naked Hunger', which comes in 'Vocal Mix' and 'Spoken Word Mix' versions, sees Quiet Village employ their hypnotic sensibilities to one of house music's most tantalising vocal talents in Daou, resulting in a mid-tempo house cut that completely envelops.

While the vocal mix of 'Naked Hunger' leans into the interplay between Vanessa Daou's cosseting song voice and spoken vocals, with the rest of the track embracing a subtly dubby ethereal musicality, Quiet Village ramp up the instrumentation on the 'Spoken Vocal' version with bass guitar and piano flourishes accompanying her sultry poetic delivery.

'Naked Hunger', Daou's first collaboration with Quiet Village, marks her first release since 2019's 'Little Black Dress'.

Throughout her illustrious career, the acclaimed three-time #1 Billboard Dance Chart topper has collaborated with Danny Tenaglia, David Morales, Mood II Swing, Ralphi Rosario, Terry Farley (Farley & Heller), Charles Webster, Horse Meat Disco's Severino Panzetta, Hifi Sean, and Eli Escobar.

Friends since meeting at Goldie's legendary MetalHeadz sessions at London's Blue Note in the '90s, Quiet Village, aka Matt Edwards and Joel Martin, began releasing their brand of dubbed-out, balearic-and-beyond tracks in 2005 via NYC's Whatever We Want Records. The duo's 2008 'Silent Movie' LP was a critical smash hit that resulted in remix commissions for the likes of Bryan Ferry, The Gorillas, Leftfield, Francois K, Massive Attack and many more.

After a few years in the wilderness, unable to use their nom de plume due to contractual restrictions, the pair launched The Quiet Village label in 2024 with 'Reunion', a stunning 6/8 time urban jazz odyssey, a favourite of the likes of Luke Una, Gilles Peterson and Ryan Elliott.

In 1995 me and my friend Ari of Lumi records realized it maybe was actually a waste time to try to run a dancelabel with no experience from the north of Finland. Indeed. Instead, it might be a smart idea just to focus on making music and find a label that was already established and have them put the music out.

Swedish radio had a show at the time called "Tema: Dans", and they would have some guest DJ's coming over and doing their thing. Usually more traditonal housey stuff, but one wednesday evening Calle had a guest that blew my mind: Cari Lekebusch.
Playing what could've been jacking Chicago traxx, but somehow it was all different... and as it turned out it was mostly done by what the world would become to know as the Stockholm Techno Gods; Cari, Adam Beyer, Jesper Dahlbäck, Alexi Delano, Joel Mull, Jean-Louis Huhta, et al -and all their aliases.

Impressed by all this I sent Cari a letter (yes, a handwritten one) with a democassette of some of my tracks telling him how I had heard all this music on the radio and since his name (Cari, not Lekebusch) implied a Finnish connection he might be interested in expanding his empire eastbound.

A week later I received a letter from Cari simply stating "You're definitely not faking the funk" and a phonecall followed a few days later and a friendship was established. My friends Ari Ruokamo and Tuomas Salmela also sent tracks to Cari and he was quite excited about this northern Finnish sound and even started a new label called Trainspotter's Nightmare to release our stuff on.

Of all the music Cari himself has done my favourite is maybe the Mr Barth stuff. Slightly less abstract than some of his other more experimental techno, but easily as uncompromising, and on some levels more open minded with a certain crossoverpotential.

2-09 Mr. James Barth - Workin' The Truth

Turbo Recordings was founded by Tiga in Montreal back in 1998. In addition to launching his own career, the label has been integral in the success of acts like Chromeo, Gesaffelstein, Duke Dumont and most recently, ANNA & Charlotte de Witte. Core talent includes ZZT (Tiga's collaboration with Zombie Nation), Jori Hulkkonen, BETON, Clouds, Harvard Bass, Pilo, Shaded, Dimitri Veimar and a host of new young producers in genres ranging from pure techno, electro, and house to pop. The list of artists who have released music on the label is a veritable 'who's who' of top-level talent spanning a broad musical range, and this, along with a commitment to beautiful design, has earned the label respect in the industry and a cult following among fans. 

“We started out singing into plastic bags and shipping them to stores as quickly as possible. Later, we discovered that vinyl sounds way better when delivered by kayak. I learned so much the first few years…Now, as I look towards the future, I can envision music for poor people, sonic odors for the hearing impaired, even MP3s for women....Vroom, sucka!” says Tiga, the lyrical lampsman lighting the way down Dance Avenue.
