Rose City-based Justin Neal shares “Hollowed” off his Refractions EP, forthcoming on SubSensory Recordings, for a first listen through Peace Portal.

On Refractions, Neal peers back at the mechanized rhythms of his Midwestern roots through the lens of modern dub techno practices. The result is four enveloping and percussive studies on fusing the old with the new.

“Hollowed” in particular is a deep dub techno groove with chords echoing out of subsonic space, shivering textures skittering in stereo, and low end entrancingly pulsing. Classic four-on-the-floor hypnosis.

Berlin’s Sascha Funke weighs in with a hard-hitting new four-tracker for Tiga’s label.

Hot off his comeback on Multi Culti, this latest EP for Turbo Recordings takes the hypnotic, progressive vibe and drives it a little bit harder, leaning into every snare with precise power, carefully administering tension over the duration of professionally-paced arrangements. Title-track ‘IFA,' already a weapon in the crates of Funke-friends like Rebolledo, Michael Mayer and Tiga, sounds like the kind of peak-time party power you'd expect those dudes to pull out in the darker hours of their deepest sets, when the soundtrack calls for more than basic, visceral limb-pumping, but full disorientation, actual mind-losing. ‘Robur' rolls out of that space with minimalistic-tribalism, sounding like a mental apocalyptic march, pushing forward with intractable force, an energy which eventually relents on ‘MZ,’ opening up dramatically with an epic chord progression that blooms into ecstatic, piano-house. Think ‘old-school baby,’ revisited with bittersweet self-awareness, taking us back to a place we know well, inspiring one last dance, accessing the naive rave-spirit all-too often forgotten in the ‘industry'. Finally, ‘Barkas’ recalls the tones and timbres from ‘In Relationen,’ reflecting an emotionally placid state, a sound of radiant clarity, the sound of an artist at peace with his place in the cosmos, balancing past and future, energy and stillness, mind and body.

Life, in all of its fullness, is happening right now. While our thoughts are sometimes elsewhere, beautiful opportunities and moments are being passed over and lost to the flow of time. And though we cannot possibly fully experience each leaf that falls to the ground, sometimes we get so attached to reaching our goals that we don't pay attention to the wonder all around us. When we do that, we live in a world that exists only in our heads, while we miss life itself. There is so much to be enjoyed and appreciated that we need to remember to pay attention to the present moment, because it is the only space in which we can experience being alive.

I created this set in the wood for all my friends and out of our shared frequencies of love. May the love be with you, the deep, dark, sad, brutal, desperate, but also light, creative, accepting and forgiving. It’s the one and only reason of life with billions of „I“ and one whole. Freudelfitz Festival 2020 vinyl closing set

Turbo Recordings was founded by Tiga in Montreal back in 1998. In addition to launching his own career, the label has been integral in the success of acts like Chromeo, Gesaffelstein, Duke Dumont and most recently, ANNA & Charlotte de Witte. Core talent includes ZZT (Tiga's collaboration with Zombie Nation), Jori Hulkkonen, BETON, Clouds, Harvard Bass, Pilo, Shaded, Dimitri Veimar and a host of new young producers in genres ranging from pure techno, electro, and house to pop. The list of artists who have released music on the label is a veritable 'who's who' of top-level talent spanning a broad musical range, and this, along with a commitment to beautiful design, has earned the label respect in the industry and a cult following among fans. 

“We started out singing into plastic bags and shipping them to stores as quickly as possible. Later, we discovered that vinyl sounds way better when delivered by kayak. I learned so much the first few years…Now, as I look towards the future, I can envision music for poor people, sonic odors for the hearing impaired, even MP3s for women....Vroom, sucka!” says Tiga, the lyrical lampsman lighting the way down Dance Avenue.
