I've been in love with music all my life.
My passion is writing music that comes from the heart.
I'm a songwriter that sings, not a singer songwriter (if that makes sense?)
Like many songwriters, I hear tunes in my head all day long, like an eternal radio somewhere inside.
I love the fact I can scoop these bits of music out of my head and turn them into complete songs, and share them with others.

We're Monica da Silva & Chad Alger, also known as Complicated Animals. We're a Brazilian-American duo based in California. Our music crosses styles, and we call our genre Indie Nova. Our EP In This Game features songs in English and Portuguese. Pop Matters called it "a 6 song masterpiece", and "the beginning of a new sound" 

Our songs have been featured in the movie Lady Bird, in a campaign for Tory Burch, in the Netflix movie The Last Summer, and in a Patron Tequila ad. The video for our cover of Times Like These by Foo Fighters, just got an Honorable Mention in the 2024 WideScreen Film & Music Festival.

Our new single Watcher (out on 08/09/2024), is inspired by our love for crime dramas and Nordic noir TV, and poses a question to humanity - are we ready to act on what we believe?

“I'd been thinking about there being two sides to everything, two opposing forces. Good and evil,” says singer Monica da Silva. “They are two sides of the same coin, but I want to imagine that good will prevail. That it's the more powerful force.”

Watcher started with a simple piano line that da Silva would play every time she would sit down at the piano. Producer and musician Chad Alger added drums and programming that swirl around the thematic, swelling melody, and seem almost woven into the plot, and entwined in the lyrics.

“We wanted the song to take on its own life”, says Alger. “Almost as if it were breathing on its own".
