The book investigates the witch as a key rhetorical symbol in twentieth- and twenty-first century feminist memory, politics, activism, and popular culture. The witch demonstrates the inheritance of paradoxical pasts, traversing numerous ideological memoryscapes. This book is an examination of the ways that the witch has been deployed by feminist activists and writers in their political efforts in the twentieth century, and how this has indelibly affected cultural memories of the witch and the witch trials, and how this plays out in popular culture representations of the symbol through the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Consequently, this book considers the relationship between popular culture and media, activist politics, and cultural memory. Using hauntological theories of memory and temporality, and literary, screen, and cultural studies methodologies, this book considers how popular culture remembers, misremembers, and forgets usable pasts, and the uses (and misuses) of thesememories for feminist politics. Given the ubiquity of the witch in popular culture, politics and activism since 2016, this book is a timely examination of the range of meanings inherent to the figure, and is an important study of how cultural symbols like the witch inherit paradoxical memories, histories, and politics. Taner Akçam provides the evidence to refute the basis of these claims and demonstrates clearly why the documents can be trusted as authentic, revealing the genocidal intent of the Ottoman-Turkish government towards its Armenian population. Don't let the size fool you. Wilson has packed a lot of knowledge and insight into a slim volume, so you should treat it like a book three times its size, and give yourself extra time to digest everything.
YOU PROBABLY WON'T GET IT ALL IN ONE READING
His main arguments are easy enough for undergraduate and graduate students to discern, as long as they know not to get bogged down in the names, titles, and references to various theories. How to do this? When I read it, I put a mark in the margin for each name ("n"), source/book ("s"), and theory ("t") so that I could come back to those later. I resisted the urge to look up any of it on the first reading.
AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE FIELD
I've found that return visits are rewarding. I have often encountered the authors or discussions about them elsewhere by that time, and I understand more about what he is saying. I've found it useful to think of this as a kind of annotated bibliography of important works in the field of history. He shares just enough to give you a sense of what he is talking about. Chances are, if he mentions someone's name in the book, then they'll be worth reading in more depth later.
COVERAGE LIMITED, BUT GOOD INTRO TO THE FIELD
Of course, his coverage is far from exhaustive. There are many other significant contributions to the field that I would have liked to have seen discussed in there. However, he provides a good starting point for those who want to know more about the origins, current trends, and future directions for the field.

This volume develops a comprehensive framework for applying the theory of hauntology to everyday life from ethnographic and clinical points of view. The central argument of the book is that all human experience is fundamentally haunted, and that a shift from ontological theory of subjective experience to a hauntological one is necessary and has urgent implications. Building on the notion of hauntology outlined by Derrida, the discussions are developed within the frameworks of psychoanalytic theory, specifically Jacques Lacan’s object relational theory of ego development and his structural reading of Freud’s theory of the psychic apparatus and its dynamics; along with the Hegelian ontology of the negative and its later modifications by 20th century philosophers such as Heidegger and Derrida; and the semiotics of difference introduced by Saussure and worked by Jakobson and others.
