In this 136-minute voyage, we canter around the Tropics to soak in a healthy dose of esoteric gyrations deeply rooted in canonical African rhythms.

 Dundunbanza is an “evil” Congolese spirit which has been defied for centuries by the followers of the Palo Monte religion that gained prominence in Cuba. And while “bad” spirits in African traditions are not always evil per se (an imperialist concept imposed through colonization and Christianity), they are in fact often seen as a metaphysical vessel for one’s intentions and worthiness. That being said, the song “Dundunbanza” (n° 13 in the mix) by Arsenio Rodriguez - one of the originators of Cuban Son Montuno – is in fact calling out a certain malevolent spiritual presence! If this spirit has been reincarnated today in the form of a severe acute respiratory syndrome known as SARS-CoV-2 to agonise our lives, then by the power of Arsenio’s mambo may this spirit twist and turn to his demise!

 While the tracks selected for this mix aren’t all necessarily related to African religions, they pay homage to the vibrant African heritage that they draw inspiration from. The spirit of the mix is that the power of joyful melancholy and minor scales over pure rhythmic hypnosis, can transcend a listener or dancer to a state of elation.

Non-stop vintage Latin and Tropical rarities from across the Atlantic and other (sub)tropical regions recorded from original LPs, 45s and old shellacs found by Fred from Souma records, as a guest mix for the Turning Point Sessions friends in Toronto.

"Yemenite Voices" is a selection of vinyl recordings (with the exception of 1 cassette track) of both legendary and rather obscure Yemenite artists. The tracks are in several Yemenite styles and range from early traditional recordings to more modern/orchestrated ones, spanning 4 decades (50s to 80s) in total; open your ears and hearts and you will hopefully enjoy most of them! 

It is worth noting that the reason for using Yemenite (يماني in Arabic) for the title, over Yemeni (يمني in Arabic), is that Yemeni generally refers to nationals of modern-day Yemen while Yemenite is the more inclusive term which includes anyone whose ancestors are from Yemen and identifies as being culturally Yemenite, regardless of where they were born or live.

TPS 053 - KARIŞIK LOKUM KUTUSU - Turkish record Selections by WoMu Vin

"Karışık Lokum Kutusu" translates to "A box of assorted Turkish delights", which I thought would be a fitting name to describe the variety of tracks in this all-vinyl mix recorded from OG Turkish records from the 70s and 80s, with a variety of styles including (but not limited to) modern takes on Anatolian folk, funk-infused pop and Arabesque. The mix features several artists including Arif Sağ, Zafer Dilek, Yıldıray Çınar and Hakkı Bulut, all of whom were highly influential in reinterpreting and modernising the music they performed and produced for other artists.

I am dedicating this mix to the dearly missed Mads Nimann Jensen (Instagram @madsnimann) whom we lost a year ago to the day (October 13th) as a result of terminal cancer. In losing Mads we lost a legendary collector, but more importantly, a legendary human being (anyone who has ever been in contact with him will know exactly what I mean by that).

Berlin‘s original tropical music pioneer DJ Nomad has been a collector of South African and Zimbabwean music for over 30 years. 
Berlin had due to it‘s very political music scene of the 80‘s close ties to south africa. Several anti-apartheid labels were based in Berlin, so there never was a shortage of southern African music in the city. Young Nomad fell in love with the fierceness, pride and love that the music from the townships radiated
Songs that spoke of the daily struggles of  the apartheid : living in township ghettos, working hard labour jobs, alcoholism, domestic violence and the mapantsulas - the street gangsters but also about love, romance and the hope for an evolution(which was soon to come).

This mix focuses on exactly that time period, the pre- revolutionary 60‘s and 70‘s before Kwaito & Bubblegum reflected a new way of life. It‘s a testament of life in the townships in the era of township jive, township soul and the early beginning of disco It travels from the townships to the north too the war torn city of Harare, that was still in the midst of the second "Chimurenga“  - the great Zimbabwe Rhodesian war for Independance. Later a whole genre of guitar heavy music from that area - showcased in the second half of the mix- was named after that conflict.

South African & Zimbabwean music from that certain era is loaded with history of the struggle for a better, more beautiful life. A longing for peace, love and equality. It was also a solace and source of  power to cope until those changes manifest.That‘s why it is the lifeblood of the south

Back in the summer of 2023, we received a message from a kind lady in Southern Ontario. She told us that she had inherited a collection of 78rpm shellac records from her late father, who was of Greek descent and had a deep love for music.

While we don’t typically collect 78s—since the format is difficult to use in clubs, fragile, and heavy to transport for a mobile setup—I was still intrigued by the idea of exploring music from this era and this unique culture. So, I decided to take a road trip and see where my curiosity would lead.

Long story short, I came home with a large collection of Greek 78s. Now, with eager ears, I was ready to hear what I had blindly purchased. The beautiful labels sparked my curiosity—many of them were from New York City, dating from the mid-1920s to the early 1950s.Finally we had time to record our favourites from this collection of dusty crackley magical deep moody bluesy recordings 

and now sharing with the many curious ears in 2025
via this Raw low-fi mix with some records being almost 100 year old
and to which are of the very first Greek recordings

Guest selector WoMu Vin (@WorldMusicVinyl) is back with an all Algerian Chaabi selection.

Here are his notes: This mix is named after Café Malakoff of the Casbah of Algiers which was considered the prime meeting venue for the most prominent Chaabi artists of 20th century Algeria. In fact, in its heyday it was owned by the most influential Chaabi master of his time, the legendary Hadj Mohammed El Anka, who was nicknamed "The Cardinal" (of Algerian Chaabi).

The mix features several legendary Algerian Chaabi artists including Hadj Mohammed El Anka, Dahmane El Harrachi, Boudjemaa El Ankis (whose picture appears on the artwork of this mix), El Hachemi Guerouabi, Abdelkader Chaou, Amar Ezzahi and Amar Laachab.

Another legendary Algerian Chaabi artist/songwriter/composer who should certainly be mentioned in this mix's notes is Mahboub Bati, the man who wrote and composed some of the biggest hits of the names mentioned above (with the exception of El Anka and Dahmane), many of which are featured in this mix; undoubtedly the leading moderniser of Algerian Chaabi in the second half of the 20th century.

All tracks were recorded from vinyl and cleaned up digitally to improve the poor mastering and/or pressing quality of some of the records; a time consuming task that was completely worth the effort given how great I think those tracks are.
