They were sadder than stray dogs 
But you’ve no cause to pity em!  

Your story’s more interesting told as an idiom. 

They were driving like they slipped the dogs of war 
As excited as two hound dogs on a scent 
And they drove and drove until their tank was drier than a popcorn fart 

The car was useless as two titties on a boar
So they abandoned it and off on foot they went 
Both fugitives now wanted for the robbing of the local quickie mart 

They were dumb as two boxes! 
They were thick as two bricks! 
They were sly as two foxes!

There was obviously no escape in runnin’ 
They were handcuffed and then read their rights , the cops like priests were asking for confession. 

To use an idiom,  I guess that’s that. 
Just one surprise:  her oven’s got a bun in!  
Behold!  Another story told with idioms:  a figurative expression!  

They were snared like two rabbits 
That weren’t worth two licks
Just Two nasty habits 
That everyone kicks 

They were slumping like poor slobs 
This dirt covered pair 
They were dumber than door knobs 
Or a bag of wet hair
