This performance took place in the OLVG-kerk in Uitgeest on the 24 October 2021 as part of the program of the Russisch-Nederlands Vocaal Sextet. This is an interpretation of the traditional Armenian melody for duduk.

PROGRAM NOTE
"Dash" is inspired by common meanings of the word ‘dash’: to travel or run somewhere in a great hurry, or to hurl an object with great force, often with destructive effect. I was also inspired by other meanings, such as adding a dash of something to something else, for example, adding a dash of salt or pepper. A dash is also a type of punctuation mark. There are em dashes—like these—as well as en dashes, used to indicate spans of time or ranges of numbers, like 20–21, or hyphens, which denote compound adjectives, like well-known brass quintet. An underscore, which emphasize words, phrases, or sentences, can also look like a dash. In music notation, a dash is called a tenuto, and is used to indicate emphasis when placed under or over notes. Of course, in this piece, I had to include plenty of tenutos. "Dash" was was commissioned by the Atlantic Brass Quintet.

To amplify his feelings that want to be listened

especially now, on a Wednesday evening of all nights?  
I wondered and asked him what? difference does it make  
He said wendsday seems to be the symbol of randomly choosen time   
Without beginning and without any end like a clock that will never chime  
It does not matter what was before or what happen after that (6)

And his eyes told me that he had seen more than
we might imagine together at all

He was lost for so long his voice has falling in silent 
From the distance of the past only his verses reminded 
but he came back to close the gashes

With wine and cigarettes as a formula with which 
he’s searching for his golden voice like an alchemist (9)

so calm and gentle, so somber and 

if i ever come by, to that hotel in New York 
i devote myself to his paintings and his art works (11)

while i listen to these poems, of which he can be very proud
