James Curd, Adam Frawley and Mitchell van Kaathoven aka Holy Models are a 3 piece Psychedelic Daytime Disco band hailing from outback South Australia. Their work transports the listener into a dream type state, yet rendering them fully conscious. Their genre bending style allows the user to explore a variety of different feelings. ‘Swimming’ is a textbook example. 

Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of releasing Freeform Five’s comeback EP ‘Weltareh’ on Eskimo. Today we are more than glad to present you the first Freeform Five Reform in a looong time. Big!

Dutch newcomers Tesla55’s remix reminds us of that vintage Chromeo sound, which you all know we like a lot. Fellow Aussie Rocco Raimundo delivers a trippy version that is tailor made for a lazy afternoon at the poolside. 

Swimming is the opening track from The Pink Collection, the first installment in a brand new Eskimo compilation series that will be out early September.

Here's a preview from our release (ICE-005), Zambian band Witch's early 80's rarity Movin' On. Known for their psychedelic fuzz masterpiece Lazy Bones, this is another side of Witch. This time around the band created another masterpiece, but this time with a whole new sound capturing the spirit of the early 80's, and changing political atmosphere in Africa with a perfect mix of MJ/Jake Solo boogie, and Fleetwood Mac AOR moves. This is an album in the fullest sense, a snapshot of the group at their creative peak, with stellar musicianship, blending American and African influences and peerless production and synthesizer work by the great Patrick Mwondela. This is the African/Balearic boogie version of Band On The Run.

Christy Essien Igbokwe’s 1979 Afro-funk gem ’You Can’t Change A Man’ has been reemerging lately thanks in no small part to the African Shakedown 12″ released earlier in the year, which brought together four long-lost Afro-disco edits. Here, Borrowed Identity doesn’t do much to the gloriously funky vocal track but extend it and make it a little more DJ friendly.

No introduction needed for this soul train classic by Kool and The Gang. I have been messing with it for some time now trying to make a modern DJ friendly version and thought it would be nice to share. Initially I made the sorter 'hip cut' for me to play and mashup crossing over from soul and hip hop to disco but then I realized I could not do without the magical ARP synth solo so thus the 'extended version'. It took a while to tame and make it work and now here it is. Enjoy this fine piece of music and Merry Xmas peepz !

Rounding up a year which saw crucial releases from Iron Curtis and Quarion, »Can’t Help It« is the long awaited return of sample wizards Session Victim to the ep format. This Retreat 3-tracker is a profound, subtle and quite melancholic affair, perfect for those emotional moments in the early morning. Skillfully arranged and featuring the impeccable playing of Linnart Ebel, »Can’t Help It« is once again an essential statement from one of House Music’s most fascinating duo.
»Pass The Diesel« begins with a stuttering beat, seagull like noises and muted chords that wouldn’t be out of place on a vintage Group Home instrumental. Staying on the aquatic tip, Session Victim introduce a beautiful Rhodes sequence which takes the track into a dream-like – dare we say californian? – direction. Spiced up with gentle synth noodlings, ethereal vocal snippets and a magical strings motive, »Pass The Diesel« bathes in the deeper shades of House without ever drowning in a cliché, thanks to its snapping drums and vivid arrangement.
Slowing things down a notch, »Hyuwee« starts off with what is maybe the most unconventional instrument in Session Victim’s repertoire, the banjo! But the fear of witnessing these down-to-earth-boys actually becoming the boys-down-south vanishes after 30 seconds: a melancholic 3-Chord theme, snappy 808 patterns and funky drum fills lead the tune in a familiar (but vast) territory. Linnart Ebel’s talent is put to great use with subtle guitar licks that give a lively feel to the whole song. You will notice that Session Victim have labeled »Hyuwee« as an »instrumental«. Does it mean that we can expect a vocal version in the near future? All bets are on as to who will provide the vocals to this one …
Flip the record over for the magnificent »Tearwiper«, a slow-house groover which might be Session Victim’s deepest excursion on wax so far. Abyssal chords, radio effects and a dragging 105 bpm beat set the stage for a grand sonic adventure. The track breaks down after the introduction of the guitar theme and a warm sub bass takes center stage in order to drive »Tearwiper« in a confident manner. Shakers and bubbling synths are floating around whereas Linnart’s hypnotic playing provides a steady backing to the bassline. Another breakdown and the elements are nicely washed away while a thoughtful guitar solo brings this underwater journey to an end.

Side A is a psychedelic cover of Jorge Ben's all time classic 'Carolina Carol Bela'. Very little is known about Os Brazoes except that they formed in Rio De Janeiro in 1969 backed Gal Costa during her early 'Tropicalia' years. The front man of the band is Miguel de Deus. This track appears on their self titled LP on RGE in 1969. This track has never been released on 7".

Side B features one of the unique, greats of Brazilian music Tim Maia. Maia was renowned for his iconoclastic, ironic, outspoken, and humorous musical style. E Necessario is taken from his self titled 1977 LP on Som Livre, previously unreleased on 7".

A collection of covers of master Brazilian musician and writer Jorge Ben. With such classics under his belt as Mas Que Nada, covered by the likes of Sergio Mendes, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Al Jarreau, and the song Taj Mahal which was the source of Rod Stewart’s Do You Think I’m Sexy?, Ben is a huge force in Brazilian popular music.

Often described as the James Brown of Brazilian music due to his prolific output, he is the most sampled Brazilian artist ever with people from the Black Eyed Peas to DJ Marky lifting elements off his tracks. His song catalogue has also been covered by some of the finest bands in Brazil.

This selection represents a more dance-floor orientated outing including mega rarities for the collecting fiends like Cosa Nostra by Os Mutreteiros Grilados and tracks that even Ben himself never got around to singing like Rei Do Maracatu's Cyro Aguiar.

This mix was recorded 2 days after my friend Mehdi passed away, 2 days after we had lunch in Paris. 3 days earlier we had lunch in Paris. Just after I landed, I received all this devastating messages as I turned my phone on. I had to play that night, it was not easy, one of the most emotional set I've ever played. I tried to pay a tribute to Mehdi including some of his favorites, a hip-hop section, and my favorite tracks of his.

Emotional Rescue is delighted to be able to reissue this holy-grail of the Afro-Cosmic scene.  It is not often a record has 2 tracks on the all time lists, but with the Danielle Baldelli's Cosmic favourite Ink Man and Beppe Loda making Fly a Typhoon anthem, this piece of British New Wave, straight out of 80s Coventry, achieved such a feet. 

After making the transition from late 70s punk band in to early 80s synthesized new wave, Kevin Harrison released his minimal wave/synth pop album Inscrutably Obvious for Cherry Red to little fanfair in 1981.     However, the trajectory was set and the following year the Fly EP arrived on another respected indie label Glass Records (later to release The Pastels and Spaceman 3). 

Starting with Kevin’s title cut, an exhalting tripped out travel opus built around a high-hat driven drum and bass.   This is as much his vision of a future world as underpinning his clear love for rock and roll and is further explored on the slower Baldelli dream that is Ink Man.   With reverbed lyrics, stop-start drums and heavy vibes before shifting in to a two tone inspired stepper. 

The best though is possibly saved till last with the kosmiche ode Views Of The Rhine.   Echoes of Neu! and Cluster are bounced from keys to the now signature contours and flourishes of the live drums. 

Uplifting and a beautiful end, this classic EP is the first of 2 Harrison projects coming on Emotional Rescue, so watch this space.

Fully licensed and remastered for release in December 2012.

Tim Maia, THE Brazilian Funk Soul Godfather was the real thing. His 1970 debut album introduced his audacious talent, as well as North American soul and funk musical influences, forever changing Brazilian popular music. His legendary appetites sought out carnal AND spiritual fulfillment in equal measure.  He bought 100 hits of LSD and handed them out to the staff of his record label. At the height of his mid-70s success he joined the Cult of Racional Energy; watching for spaceships while wearing only white clothes and playing only white instruments! Yet the two albums he recorded for the Cult are among his best. His songs search for love, and they dig into the existential. His own lyrics say it best: “I am so groovy now and I don’t care!”

In these fast-moving times, where many acts come and go in the space of a few blog posts, it's becoming harder and harder to find artists with true staying power. Anu Pillai aka Freeform Five is one of those rare artists.

Following an impressive series of original productions & remixes and a relentless touring schedule, Anu decided to take a break from Freeform Five a few years back to concentrate on writing, producing & remixing for the likes of Ladyhawke, Santigold, Lana Del Rey, Little Boots and Roisin Murphy amongst others.

Anu has always thought outside the box. His remix of Isolee's Beau Mot Plage redefined the art of remixing, juxtaposing the micro-synthesis of the original with intricate Afro & Latin polyrhythms, creating a bonafide house music classic. Now Anu has come full circle, collaborating with Gambian griot and master musician Juldeh Camara (a member of Robert Plant's Sensational Space Shifters band) for his latest release Weltareh on the legendary Eskimo recordings. As a multi instrumentalist, composer, DJ  and producer, Anu can skillfully meld the organic musicianship of Juldeh's Fulanese riti (a one string violin) and kologo with his own studied electronic experimentation and guitar playing – as one listen to this truly epic track will attest.

Prins Thomas joins the the stellar list of super talented artists who've been invited to remix Freeform Five tracks (following on from Tiefschwarz, Radioslave, Lindstrom, Mylo, M.A.N.D.Y, Ewan Pearson, Jackson & His Computer Band and Maurice Fulton to name a few) along with a stunning re-work from Anu himself alongside Glasgow Underground's Kevin Mckay.
