John Rose is a composer working out of Lexington, Kentucky. John has worked for many years doing live radio, outdoor festivals, art openings and planetarium performances. John has been a pioneer of electronic music in Kentucky since the 1970s. He continues to work on solo recordings, and is a sound tech and stage hand. He recently started recording and producing music for other people. John also loves to teach wilderness survival and awareness and has been doing so at camps and workshops around Kentucky and Tennessee.

John Rose’s music is created primarily from his own experiences, what he calls “life’s soundtracks”. He utilizes elements from his diverse musical background, which includes early music (especially the Medieval and pre-Renaissance era), Baroque (owing to his direct musical lineage to J.S. Bach through oral teaching tradition), Middle Eastern Music, Gregorian chant, traditional Celtic and Appalachian music, and experimental electronic music.

Music and musicians who are of interest to John Rose are J.S. Bach, Arvo Part, Tangerine Dream, Dead Can Dance, Gregorian chant, Cantigas de Santa Maria, Alan Stivell, Morton Subotonic, John Jacob Niles, Debussy, and Chopin. He considers Nature and Silence to be the foundation of all music.

John’s music is timeless and pensive, interwoven with images of nature, expressive rhythms, deep space pulses, and industrial ambience. Other compositions contain intricate piano passages dancing across waves of geometric ostinatos.

Hi I am Dan, I am enamoured with Indie/Rock/Alternative music. I went to a festival in 1998 and hearing an acoustic guitar player/singer inspired me to get my first acoustic guitar and I have never been without one ever since.

My source of motivation to play comes from two places:
1: The desire to deconstruct/recreate/cover songs I hear.
2: Supporting the above by understanding music from the perspective of exercise, using a systems based approach.

i am keen to share what i know and teach.

Why a Holistic Approach to Music?
Students are offered Guitar/Singing and Piano lessons incorporating a holistic approach. Rather than becoming an expert of one, a strong base understanding of all three can help the beginner musician. For example, due to the continuum nature of the piano, intervals are easier to visualise. The guitar offers greater skill separation and may provide better intermediate progression. Voice is the perfect compliment to both and singing with greater confidence can help to fully understand the full structure of a given piece of music.

Guitar Lessons: Developing technique in the fretting arm, note more strength is required to pull fingers away from fretboard.
Triads: how to build three note chords
Open Chords: how the guitar chords can double or triple notes and how to use this.
Basic strumming patterns: knowing when to accentuate notes, keep constant strumming and select when strings are struck.
Arpeggios and finger picking: Assigning digits to strings and providing a solid foundation for picking hand placement.
Riffs and Licks: looking at some popular repeated picking sequences.
Spider exercises: how to use ‘finger per fret’ technique.
Spider exercises (flat plectrum) how to use the up/down/up/down and repeat for each string.
Modes of the Major Scale: examine each mode in turn observe how the WWHWWWH (Ionian) formula is manipulated for each mode.
Modes and Picking: Examine how the flat pick must respond to odd numbers of notes per string Alternate Picking: a bar by bar approach to disregarding the direction of pick travel in order to achieve pick strike and system of operation.
Peddling: using a base, strum pick, base, pick, strum, pick approach including string isolation.

Singing Lessons: 
Use the the guitar to train voice, mainly using the Ionian mode with ascending and the voice an octave above to match pitch.
Breathing techniques and mouth shapes
Vowel annunciation/softening
Removing the capo/adjusting the key to regress vocal difficluty whilst building strength

Piano Lessons (all drills work on right hand first, then left hand, then both):
Finger strength and dexterity building by moving through the keys and key combinations.
Intervals: how the keyboard is structured in Ionian meaning no black notes are required to play this mode in C.
Intervals and modes: how the WWHWWWH formula can be used for each key or how the mode can be manipulated.
Left and right hand assimilation techniques
How to build chords: observing how major and minor chord are constructed by flattening the third not of the scale


The above list is not exhaustive but techniques here will provide a strong foundation from which to begin your career as a musican.
