2017 Set Watchlist

Don’t think the fact that you’ll be spending your weekend getting beamed in the face by beach balls and railing sunscreen necessarily implies that shit can’t get at least a little bit cerebral when you’re out in Palm Springs for Splash House. 

As multinational deep house  TACHES’ Splash House Session mix shows, there’s plenty of room for headier themes that keep a laid back vibe. For example, acts unknown in the dance world like The Books and Blonde Redhead sit very comfortable aside choice house cuts from the likes of Dance Spirit and Butch. Even The Zombies’ flower power folk-rock classic “Time of the Season” gets an outing, albeit via an M.in & Suptil edit.

British by passport, but not by heart, TÂCHES grew up within the romanticized confines of the Mediterranean island, Mallorca.

An uplifting combination of “in the moment” euphoria and pensive melancholy, TÂCHES’s voice can be heard clearly through his alluring and romantic productions and equally abnormal selections. Finicky tastes and internal demands have translated into a tightly tuned and gallantly groomed discography - one that we suggest you peruse for yourself.

The clamors and infatuations of life in 2016 currently see TÂCHES huddled down underneath the frivolous shine of the American west coast, a locale that serves as his home whilst traversing the eclectic landscape of North America.

TRP came crashing onto to the Lobster Theremin radar deep into 2014 with a relentless output of hammering raw house and crunchy techno emitting from his South-West German lair. A clattering, undulating, acidic blend of genres all set to fire the floor into life.

We finally met in person at the LT night at Prince Charles in Berlin last year and his set that night was actually meant to be used for this very podcast series. However, having kicked out about 8000 racks since then it only seems right that we present a very special 100% TRP mix of unreleased material, cut direct from the lab.

After a tropical storm powered by gaming-vengeance battered the long lost Secret Island, our young protagonist DJ Sonikku - ruffled but not deterred, having drifted for months on a bird-nested raft - finds himself landing on the shores of New York City. Megadrive chip intact, mates along for the ride, and a half century of electronic heritage soaked up in a flash - All My Friends is the culmination of Sonikku's mental and spiritual journey into his own version of a hyperreal NYC. 

A regular feature of the Sonikku homeland and epic structural facet, Chemical Plant is soaked and squeezed with just the right amount of Italo and disco, layered over a stocky 16-bit house groove and a slap heavy FM bass-line. 

Sand Oasis is less about the nostalgic and more about Sonikku now. Beach-tanned drum warmth cracks, pops and whistles in and among sugar-coated, sweet-as-a-nut synth melodies and a rolling 'n' tumbling bass bump. 

Hogging the B-side but to maximum effect, Untitled (Club Use) is a full on music-as-the-medium club statement. A longing and yearning to have have witnessed and being immersed in thriving 80's and 90's New York scene, drawing a distinctive and direct influence from Shep Pettibone and Junior Vasquez. Pure floor-flattening heat riding hard on a Jersey-edged drum shuffle and tightly-chopped vocal flourishes.
