The word “journey” gets tossed around a lot in the world of dance music. When I wrote Voken Rai, I took that concept as literally as possible. Starting with an arpeggiated strobe like melody, I placed my fingers on the Moog Sub37 and introduced the pulsating bassline in to the soundscape. The song quickly became more of a performance rather than something programmed. As the bassline opens up during the intro, atmospheric elements help to lift the song to a crescendo of harmony and awakened senses. The earth-like kick drum eases its way in to the mix, commanding attention and teasing what’s to come.  I wanted the drums and other percussive elements to be prominent yet mystical, serving a purpose to help drive the experience along. I performed the top line melody again on the Sub37, with splashes of reverb helping to push things in to a deep meditative atmosphere. As the song breaks free for a moment, a tease of the final stage to come appears before quickly washing away in to a wall of sound. At this point even I was hypnotized by what was happening. As an artist you sometimes reach a point with your creation where it feels as though it’s become a living thing all on its own. The final passage of the song incorporates a playful and commanding percussive melody which evolves back in to a wash of coloured atmosphere. The initial melody appears again and returns us to a familiar place, easing us softly back to the present moment.

Something truly magical happened for me with this song, I remember every moment when I was writing it. It was more than a flow-state; it was a translation of the divine creative energy coming out of me in to a pure musical form.

'Next Summer is a journey through the on-going lockdown and summarizes Semodi’s work in his Berlin Kreuzberg studio during the pandemic winter months of late 2021. While tiresome for everybody, for Semodi it was also a time of inspiration and musical exploration crossing the boundaries of genres. Coming back from his walks through the streets of Kreuzberg, he often brought home a new melody that he could then craft into his music.

Ultimately Semodi came up with three distinct tracks and presents us with a touching and emotional record that reflects his perception and experiences during the lockdown. He thus opens up a musical perspective to this special time, that we can all relate to. While “Into Deep” is an older and more techno composition that found its way onto the record, Semodi started to work with singers to implement an element of storytelling into his more recent works.

For the title track 'Next Summer' Semodi teamed up with his partner Maïlys who tells her story of the lockdown in Berlin with nothing to do outside and her desire to go out and do things again. Her spoken-word performance is embedded in a dry beat accom- panied by a simple but melodic bass line. And as Maïlys expresses her hope for the time after the lockdown and her desire to dance again next summer, the music opens up and illustrates her hope with melodic arpeggios.

'Oh Boy' is a deep and driven piece of music that guides the listener into a dreamy and psychedelic parallel universe. Guest artist Antigone adds a mesmerizing dimension to the track and completes the picture with her outstanding vocal performance.

With Melokind, Nico Pusch and Theus Mago three skilled remixers contribute their per- sonal interpretations of Semodi’s tracks to the record and thus broaden the multitude of genres to choose from.
While Melokind delivers a deep, melodic version of “Oh Boy” that radiates the positive warmth of a festival afternoon, Nico Pusch contributes an up-tempo tech house version of the same track that will work nicely on peak time main floors. Theus Mago presents us with his never-ending-lockdown psychedelic remix of “Next Summer”.'

Rikki Sawyer returns to the label with a powerhouse groove - 'Purity'. Remix support comes from Darren Bray, Hall North and Ucleden.

Irishman Rikki Sawyer broke onto the scene back in 2013 with a series of strong releases for seminal labels such as Lowbit, Balkan Connection and Mistique Music. Garnering widespread support from Hernan Cattaneo to Drumcomplex, his music has soundtracked dance floors all over the globe.

In original form, 'Purity' is a tough prog groove for the late nite floors that marries power with emotional content, sinewy low end grunt juxtaposes perfectly with airy sonics and earworm synths for that trademark Sawyer vibe. On the remix, studio buddy Darren Bray, hot from his recent solo release with us, reimagines an epic end of night ride, while Hall North creates a driving percussive groove with airy soundscape sonics, and Ucleden goes subterranean and dubby.

'Making their Plaisirs Sonores Records debut are production duo, Kamilo Sanclemente & Dabeat, with an incredible three track EP called Lonely Space. The Colombian pair have collaborated for quite some time signing tracks to number of labels like Replug and The Soundgarden.

Opening with a cosmic weapon, 'Lonely Space' develops into an epic deep progressive journey filled with beautiful synth melody, female vocal, fx and hypnotic pads. Elegant and hypnotic from the first bar to the last. Next up, 'Orbital' digs deep too. Opening with more low end grunt, melodic arps float lift the mood midway before deep warm pads float into earshot. Musically rich and utterly satisfying. Finally, Alex O'Rion concludes the EP with an exquisite remix of 'Lonely Space'. Stronger and more intense, sonic fx and melodic patterns are balanced against the percussive bedrock leaving ample room for the main motifs to grow creating a sense of controlled peril.  '

A rising German talent steps up for his Drumcode EP debut.

We got the first taste of Thomas Hoffknecht’s gritty Detroit-inspired sound in 2020, with ‘Code-1’ and ‘Escaping’, both impressive contributions to the recent A-Sides compilations. In a year with few highlights, the producer’s induction into the Drumcode fold marked a distinct positive.

Inspired by visits to the Planetarium in his hometown of Hamburg, Hoffknecht’s ‘Antaris’ EP is an immersive five-track work that charts the breadth of his raw, yet captivating style. The title track is driven by a catchy organ-driven riff and marching percussion and is awash with atmospheric intensity. ‘Comet’ is propelled by energetic stabs and shuffling beats. ‘Sirius’ makes its mark with a shimmering synth-line and spoken word vocal, which adds to the track’s dream-like texture. ‘Wega’ is a low-end rattler that comes up for air thanks to a piercing vox sample that smacks of ‘90s rave flavour. ‘Regulus’ is cosmic techno at its finest, as swirls of intergalactic melody radiate a halcyon spirit.

What is it that attracts us to electronic music? It’s the warmth of the bass, the groove of the drums, the hypnotic melodies and lush soundscapes, but also how it helps us to connect. Connect to the sound, to each other, and to ourselves. That’s what drives him forward. He creates music to inspire connection, and puts his heart and soul in to all of his productions and sets. Since first being exposed to Trance music in the early 2000’s with labels like Anjunabeats, A State of Trance, and In Search Of Sunrise, he began soaking up as much dance music as he could. A few years later he discovered a more “techy” sound – labels like Cocoon Recordings, Hot Creations, and Crosstown Rebels were a huge influence. Naturally, his love for these two styles of music along with lots of experimentation along the way, slowly began fusing together to create his own distinct sound. 

He has performed at a variety of clubs such as Era, City at Night and Flybar in Ottawa, and Circus, Newspeak, and Nhau bar in Montreal. His releases over the years span a multitude of genres – from Trance and Psytrance to Techno, Progressive House, and Organic House. Tyler Mesa is the next phase in his music career, having spent the prior 10 years under the “Tydal” alias. A new beginning so to speak, representing the culmination of tireless dedication and experimentation until finding a sound that truly resonated.
