Now here's an old one...which I realise is now 30 years old this year, which is a rather sobering thought.

Recorded in my old flat on Otago Street (a proper party flat so it was) and originally recorded on cassette, then at some point in the early '00s transferred to minidisc...and then at some point later saved to computer (which will all affect the overall quality)

But listen, that's the boring part, the important thing is that this really captures the zeitgeist of the time: a collective euphoria in which we imagined a global utopia was just around the corner. People of all walks of life and all tastes of music coming together under one roof. 

I've never been one to look back, but when I listen to this mix that same euphoric high and emotive psychedelia that this mix captures also now elicits a somewhat melancholic feeling. That's not just reflecting on the passage of time, or reminiscing of "better times". It's because much of this is inspired and influenced by my good friend Keith McIvor (@twitch) who died in September after a brief but brutal battle with brain cancer, and who I miss dearly. I would venture as far as saying that although I heard all the greatest DJs playing at one point or another (Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Dimitri From Paris, Sven Vath, Derrick Carter, Miss DJAX, Daniele Baldelli, you name it, I've heard them, all), Keith was the only one that blew me away so far that he is single-handedly responsible for getting me into DJing, but also the one who consistently inspired me the most.

In fact there are many aspects of this mix, not just the tracks but the idea of playing things at the 'wrong' speed, that I heard Keith do first. Right from the opening track the influence is there: I'd been a huge fan of African Head Charge since the late '80s, but it wasn't until I heard Keith playing No, Don't Follow Fashion as the doors opened into his infamously wild club Pure one night, that I realised there was a new AHC album out that I needed to get. The second track by SoundClash Republic (a Fabio Paras project) is actually one played at 45rpm which should normally be played at 33rpm (you just can't do that sort of thing with digital DJing) is also something that I heard Keith do at some stage. I'm pretty sure the third track, Moby's Go remixed by Jam & Spoon was another Pure classic...you get the gist...I could go on. Actually as I listen through it now, only the 4th, 5th, 6th and 10th tracks are ones that I DIDN'T hear at Pure! Mind you, he may have played them and I just wasn't there to hear them! It wouldn't surprise me. 

One thing is clear, I don't think I would be doing what I do now, still DJing, mostly with @wrongparty or producing music or running a label if it wasn't for his incredible inspiration.

I am indebted to him in more ways than one...he was always a musical "teacher", but eventually also my friend (and at some point my flatmate too)...and I will miss him more than words can describe.
