Scottish alt-rock trio Anchor Lane will release their new collaboration single Sychophant Disorder ft. Lo Rays via R7 Records on Friday 31st May 2024. 
The re-worked single is taken from the band’s successful album Call This a Reality? and features Glasgow based post-apocalyptic pop outfit Lo Rays.

Sychophant Disorder is a high energy, synth driven rock track that touches on the subject of recent societal events.

A frenetic assault of chromatic riffs and stop-start rhythms, ‘Speak Medieval’ explores the fragile threads that hold communication together in a world teetering on the brink. It’s a song of communion and conflict, of words that baffle and deceive. The song revels in the violent undercurrents of nursery rhymes, dragging them to their natural, gruesome conclusions, where the gleeful repetition of childhood verse dissolves into something far more sinister.

Laden with grotesquely medieval imagery - pricking needles, ergot visions, greased-up geese - the track conjures a world where language both conceals and reveals its own brutality. “I am trickster, mischief maker…” intones frontman Thomas Hawtin, an unreliable narrator prowling through the wreckage of fractured speech, wielding words like weapons.

Musically, ‘Speak Medieval’ is a breaking wheel spinning madly while petulant guitars clash and convulse, rhythms lurch unpredictably, and Hawtin’s vocal delivery veers between inebriated parson and deranged storyteller. It’s a song that embodies the chaos it describes, a thrilling and unsettling reminder that language is never as innocent as it seems.

Last Goodbye is one of our most danceable songs, but beneath the synth-driven beat lies a deep sense of longing. Inspired by nights out clubbing in Manchester and the spirit of artists like Freddie Mercury and Lady Gaga, it blends electronic grooves with raw emotion. It’s a song about love lost, memories that linger, and that bittersweet moment of letting go—set against a beat that keeps you moving, even when your heart is breaking.

‘Bring Me Back from the Black Beyond‘ is an anthemic ear-crusher drenched in pomp and severity. Anchored by a colossal dual synth-guitar riff and a tainted goth-disco beat, the track is a desperate final plea from a lover stranded in the afterlife.

‘…Black Beyond’ is a cocktail of odd bedfellows – part Joy Division, part Goldfrapp, part Kasabian, part Rocky Horror. It conjures allusions to Yeats at his most apocalyptic through a smog of fuzz bass and smeared makeup, while melding genres into a subversive electro-rock dancefloor anthem. It’s as histrionic as it is hook-laden, as fatal as it is bombastic – with love at its core. This is a song that could just as easily be heard blaring from the gates of Hades as from the football terraces or the death disco. A song for all occasions – especially those involving necromancy.

Bring Me Back from the Black Beyond

The track explores themes of crisis, uncertainty and transformation, taking inspiration from Robert Anton Wilson’s concept of Chapel Perilous – a state of mind encountered during moments of profound upheaval, where perception and reality collide. Duelling guitars bubble and thunder in their cavernous cages, building towards an expansive guitar solo that anchors its emotional intensity.

Accompanying the single is a psychedelic semi-animated music video, featuring hand-drawn monstrosities from renowned Bristol artist CF Sherratt, animated by the band’s guitarist, Tom Hackwell.

The song is part two of Debris Discs' hope and survival audio triptych, following ‘Daniel and the Apocalypse’ released earlier in the year. This time around the tempo is notched up with driving bass, bouncing beats and rousing choruses, tempered by woozy synths, twisted guitars and washed-out harmonics. The result is a disorientating slice of sonic reverie.

Inspired by a visit to Debris Discs' grandparent’s memorial bench on a windswept day on the North West English coast, We Never Die is an attempt to find comfort in the despair of loss. It tells the story of lifetime lovers so entwined they reach their end of days in tandem. They search for solace in the legacy they leave behind and a love that burns in perpetuity. It’s a message to each other and their families that this is not the end. There are no goodbyes.
