Programme Notes

This piece was written for clarinettist Johanna Leung, as part of Dr. Scott McLaughlin's Garden of Forking Paths project, and completed in January 2021. This project focusses on indeterminacy in the use of clarinet multiphonics in composition. 
  
It was premiered in the Garden of Forking Paths concert on March 16th, 2021. 

The piece also follows on from the RNCM's Practice & Research in Science & Music (PRiSM) group project Changing Music in a Changing Climate. This project brought together RNCM composers with PhD climate scientists from other universities to create works responding to the topic of climate change. 

This work has led me to begin a series of compositions which each use the voice of a different climate scientist talking about their field as the initial prompt for the musical material. This is the second piece in that series. It features the voice of Katherine Turner - a PhD ocean and climate scientist at the University of Liverpool.

Katherine was asked a short series of questions on her work, and her thoughts on the broader situation with regards to the planet's changing climate. The piece uses excerpts of her recorded responses as the sources of musical phrases, rhythms and motifs.

“This is the premiere of three movements from an extended work for string duo and electronics, featuring novel use of technology and improvisation in dialogue with one other. Arranged remotely and collaboratively during COVID lockdown; composed around the voice of futurist thinker Jordan Hall.

Using a combination of electroacoustic techniques including recordings of the duo improvising in a workshop situation plus found sounds, the piece was constructed around a section of dialogue recorded by the online media channel Rebel Wisdom in conversation with Jordan Hall, and members of their online community.”  Tywi Roberts

"This is a new flowering from the first piece ever performed by the UnHeard Hybrid Orchestra in February 2020. The original work had no full score as such, but merely some simple notation showing the main rising and falling motif in various instrumental combinations.
Using this as a prompt, we verbally arranged it into a short, semi-improvised work; allowing plenty of space for the four electronic performers to respond with filtered and processed echoes of the instrumental players.

This expanded, completely rewritten version was put together in the same collaborative, dialogical spirit; with no less than five electronic musicians exploring sonic possibilities and alternative interpretations of every sound recorded by the instrumentalists.

During the final two weeks of the project, visual artist Rose Bartels entered to collaborate on this piece. Her contributions and visual style finally ended up becoming the heart of the work, and were yet another source of delightful creativity shared across multiple individuals in this UnHeard Hybrid event." "The entirety of this piece evolved from the piano pedals, which I first played after reaching the RNCM on one of the rainiest days in recent memory. Originally intended as a prompt for the UnHeard Hybrid event in Lab Week 2020, these ideas instead remained dormant until this project, when they were worked into the prompt score for the players. This only represented 50% (or less) of the full work, since the intention was to record the instrumentalists playing this material and then expose the recordings to a second round of creativity at the hands of the electronic musicians. Finally: I collated all the sounds provided by the players, Billy, Manoli and myself, and assembled them into what is heard here." Tywi Roberts

Pilipinas is a response to a poem of the same name written in Tagalog by the young Marc Jardin from All Hallows Catholic College. I liked the way his poem touched on an innocent love of one’s country, its natural beauty and spirit, while also not shying away from the darker aspects of its history, and hoped that my piece could capture those contrasts.

Conceived as a means of integrating live acoustic players with live electronics players; with the latter generating their material by recording the former, the ensemble is a new endeavour: re-imagining the shape of the 
orchestra for the technological present. 

We performed six pieces in this concert, consisting of a mixture of new & collaborative works by RNCM composers, as well as our take on certain classical pieces.

Lab Week at the RNCM is a yearly opportunity for students to be granted full access to rehearsal spaces and concert venues, to engage in an intensive week of creativity and finally present the results in a public concert.
This Lab Week project brought together some of the RNCM's finest acoustic players with electronic practitioners, to create a unique blend of the historical with cutting-edge musical techniques.

Acoustic instruments are filtered through electronics to create the uncanny, the delicate, the chaotic, and the emergent. Players are grouped together under the section leadership of multiple electronic musicians, all united 
under the guidance of a single conductor.
