Shakir Music

Quraishi is a world-class Afghan-American master of the rubab, an ancient instrument belonging to the short-necked lute family. Traditionally made with a single piece of mulberry wood and a skin face, the rubab is often richly ornamented with inlay of bone, ivory, lapis lazuli or mother-of-pearl. There are typically three melody strings and as many as twenty sympathetic strings variably tuned to the modes or ragas, imparting a deep resonance and unique timbre to the national instrument of Afghanistan.

During Quraishi's childhood in Kabul, his father built him his first rubab. The young player quickly excelled in the regional folk styles of his country’s numerous ethnic groups — including the Pashtun, Tajik, and Uzbek — and steeped himself in the discipline and formalistic principles of classical Hindustani music theory, the foundation of Afghanistan’s musical tradition.

After moving to New York in his teens, he quickly found his calling: the dedication of his life to preserving the traditional Afghan rubab style. Quraishi’s music is a rare and vital link between the rich tradition of classical Afghan music, the golden years of Afghan radio, New York City’s diverse immigrant culture, and the future of Afghanistan’s musical identity.
