Kieran talks with Louise Shelley, PhD, Director of the Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center (TraCCC) at George Mason University, about how terrorist organizations are funding themselves by engaging in illicit trade finance, often in partnership with transnational criminal organization.
 
During their discussion, Dr. Shelly, the author of numerous publications whose most recent book is “Dark Commerce: How a New Illicit Economy is Threatening our Future,” shares typologies and identifies some of the organizations, facilitators and financiers engaged in illicit trade. While crediting the financial services industry with taking steps to stem illicit trade, she calls on the industry and others to do more, not least by joining with law enforcement and others in effective public private partnerships focused on illicit trade.

This is a binaural sound walk that I created during my riversssounds residency in March 2021. It portrays the path from a noisy bridge with lots of traffic into calmer spheres in the park. It is a trip exploring the different spaces that the river passes in the city, a trip transcending reality and triggering imagination.

A meadow in a valley surrounded by the foothills of the Urals mountains, summer morning 8:30 AM. A duet of ravens calling in flight passing by, making a half-circle from right to left. Small birds chirping, light rain tiptoeing on grass and leaves of the sparse trees, a distant river rumble. Recorded with Nevaton VR microphone into Zaxcom Fusion 12 recorder. Morning Soundscapes At Floating Fish Farm

Took the Soma Ether out for a night! There seems to be no end to what sounds can be caught with this wonderful EMF receiving 'anti-radio' from Soma Labs / Vlad Kreimer. Just received the Ether from Russia via USPS this morning. Here's raw audio of an hour in downtown Austin.

Only had it for a day but finding it's very variable. In quieter environments, Ether can find produce/receive very calming ambient tones and purr along with some very polite static and reception. You can play it like a theremin, too, attenuating and gesturing on a signal frequency, and loop on something (or a device) til it fades out of reach. But this is a demo of how loud and nicely argumentative it can be as a noise source outside among a lot of activity. It feels like a nice audio photograph of the evening and street.

Late part of an overnight recording with Line Audio CM4 mics in ORTF stereo setup (using Rycote Baby Ball Gags and Furries) from a roof terrace. Had to EQ out two frequency bands at 300 Hz and 600 Hz from a nearby HVAC.
