Shostakovich's Fugue in A Major is an incredible example of constrained compositional writing.  The piano is only playing notes in the harmonic traid of a single chord at any one time, creating zero harmonic dissonance and something incredibly beautiful.

New England Conservatory pianist Yuting Ma performs Prokofiev: Sonata for Piano no 3 in A minor, Op. 28 . Recorded live in Jordan Hall, January 28, 2016.

Of 20th-century composers of concert music, Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) left pianists with one of the more substantial bodies of work in traditional showcase formats: five piano concertos and nine piano sonatas, along with suites and other short-form works for solo piano.

In two Jordan Hall concerts, January 28 and February 1,  2016, NEC piano students celebrated Prokofiev's 125th anniversary with performances of all nine sonatas along with other solo piano works.

Prokofiev: Sonata for Piano no 3 in A minor, Op. 28

Continuing its 13th season, ROCO presented “Courageous Catalysts”, featuring a new commission by Michael Gandolfi. The new work, entitled "Houston: September 12, 1962", celebrated the 100th birthday of President John F. Kennedy and the courage of people who fight for change. Conducted by Michael Stern, the program also included Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 7 in C major, op. 105, the composer’s final published symphony, and Bruce Adolphe’s I Will Not Remain Silent, a violin concerto inspired by the life of German-American rabbi and civil rights leader, Joachim Prinz. Throughout the concerto, the violin, played by ROCO concertmaster and featured soloist, Scott St. John, represented the voice of Prinz, while the orchestra represents opposing forces – Nazi Germany in the first movement and America during the Civil Rights era in the second movement. Performed November 11, 2017, at The Church of St. John the Divine, Houston, TX.

Erik Satie's music is romantic, but understated. Lush, but austere. His work's are a precursor to the minimalism seen in the 20th century. This recording is of his best known piece, Gymnopedie No. 1. Recorded on classical guitar by William Wilson. More on  William at Facebook.com/wmwilsonguitar .
