From Life To Here

The meaning of "Rain" as told by lead singer Meg Wills:

"This song is about a friend who took her own life when we were in high school. She seemed to struggle a lot but no one really took the time to listen because of how public she was about her depression. It's like she was screaming so loud that it became background noise. It's about the aftermath of everyone wishing we had actually asked her to open up. What we could have done. If it would have mattered. I spent a lot of my time before and after at 'my spot'. I walked the tracks. I sat there morning, day, and night. I threw rocks at the trains passing while cursing the world with whoever would spend their time with me. The day after she had passed, a few friends and I met there because it was between our houses; We spent the day discussing her life and mourning the loss. It became a safe haven.

This spot was where I spent a lot of my free time during some of the worst parts of my life. My parent's divorce, the death of friends and family, and my own struggle with self destruction. Even though most of my reason for being there was dark, I still remember walking those tracks in the early mornings and late nights when I couldn't sleep and feeling a relief that I couldn't find otherwise. It's like she was there with me. It's like somehow things would be okay. I felt that she was in a safe place, too: a place of hope, light, and change. I think we all need that safe haven, where ever it may be, to get us through sometimes."
