newfangled electronic potentialities elicits visions of fulfilling serenity and troubled
oracles at once.

Sergey Komarov, Vlad Dobrovolski, Ilya Sadovsky, and Alexey Grachev, an improvisational quartet known as kurvenschreiber, fuel their vintage synthesizers with homemade solar batteries and record their sessions on reel-to-reel tapes before they can turn to dust.

In their performances, they utilize generators, radios, meteorological equipment, and pre-recorded tape loops. This niche approach allows them to create an illusion of cinematic force in sound, where the sound itself becomes the main character. The power of their sonic interpretation stems from the virtuosity of juggling resonant images, offering the audience a chance to immerse in a unique audio-visual space.

The most compelling aspect of "Licht Ausgang" is not the quartet's technological tricks or references to their deep archive of tapes, but rather its restrained emotional undertone. The precise mood is as elusive as the autumn smell of leaves, yet it is simultaneously euphoric, whimsical, and grotesquely sweet.

Nonetheless, the album can hardly be labeled as mere pastoral nostalgia, as there's a mystic current present in these tracks, constantly leading kurvenschreiber down strange and unexpected paths.

The Udacha label might have been away for a while but is now back with a vengeance. First up for this return is a new long player by the mighty fine Kurvenschreiber quarter, which is made up of Sergey Komarov, Vlad Dobrovolski, Ilya Sadovski and Alexey Grachev. These sound artists have been excelling in their field for some 10 years now and use synths as well as found sound objects to create their work. Magnetic tape loops, various instruments, pre-recorded loops, shortwave radios, transformers and much more give rise to this unique record which mixes up Boolean jazz, kurventronika and post-rock.

q. pls introduce yourself
a. Heyo, I’m Loïs (alias Erevan DJ) – born and raised in Lyon, France – from where I run the label / guestmix series Bamboo Shows and my “Herbe à Chat” LYL Radio residency.
 
q. is there a story behind the mix?
a. For sure! Entitled “Golden hands silver giant”, the mix refers to my dad who left us a year ago.
He was a huge, white-haired guy. A hell of a guitarist and a DIY whizz who spent most of his life playing music and crafting whatever his mind imagined, with the materials he gathered here and there.
Since then, I tried to keep his spirit alive through my own mixes and label. Many of these tracks would definitely be too weird or gloomy for the rocker he was but still, you can hear him noodling on the guitar, drowning out the vaporous void of time stretching out in his absence!
 
q. what’s the best way enjoy your mix?
a. Whenever you feel gloomy, sentimental. Whenever you hit the road, or when you wanna stay home, alone at night. Open the windows, turn off the lights, turn on the music and let it evolve at the contact of a warm summer surrounding sounds.
 
q. describe a favorite object in your living room...
a. Well, what about my  birth chart booklet, which has just been lying around for years, waiting to be read every time we’re drunk at home with friends? It’s just an old pile of paper held together with a staple and I childishly wrote “help” on it when I was 8. The hell I know why, it’s so dramatic! There even are pictures of me falling asleep while persistently trying to read it at 5AM.
 
q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
a. The main project of the past months has been writing, producing, and designing a book about my dad’s musical career, along with my uncle. We spent dozens of hours on this, doing researches about the numerous bands he was into, the concerts they did, the albums they released, trying to tie it all together chronologically, with the related pictures…
We’re almost done so this is a relief because it’s a massive work, but I’m so thankful for it allowed me to dig into his musical path and discover everything about him, as he was really secretive when it came to this.
Then, I’ll be able to work again on the label and many other projects like the micro-distribution I started,  the label consultancy, doing PR and writing about music!
