Tuning the pipe and strings of chitravenu

Chitravenu (www.chitravenu.org) is a unique wind and string instrument that requires a keen ear to be able to tune up and play. Since one half of it consists of a continuous pitch wind instrument played with a slide, i.e., a slide flute, sticker dots along the length of the pipe serve as cues for note placements. Since the pipe is metal, it is subject to thermal expansion. Another factor that contributes to the finer determination of the pitch of the pipe for any given slide position is the temperature and humidity conditions. The net result is that it has to be "tuned" frequently, i.e., not only the strings but also the sticker dot placements for various notes from slide flute. This audio track records the sticker dot placement process for the Shanmukhapriya scale of Carnatic music.

Additionally, the pipe bore, mouthpiece, headjoint have been designed for harmonic balance of overtones, so that overblowing results in really precise harmonics, some of which can be heard.
