The Berlin-based duo Africaine 808 – comprised of Nomad and Dirk Leyers (half of the Closer Musik project) – have been challenging the norm with their distinctive flavour of West African bass, rhythms and samples mixed into moreish disco and house tracks. It can quite simply be summarised by their "Africaine 808" name.

In early 2016, they bring their feature length debut, Basar, to New York-based imprint and partymaker, Golf Channel – home to Mark E, Juju & Jordash and DJ Nature. Basar's twelve tracks demonstrate how well Africaine 808 have perfected this intercontinental blend, with "Balla Balla" being a standout hands down. No more than a few seconds in, and we're already way, with something tribal lying at the root of its funk. An uplifting, instant crowd-pleaser for any sweaty dancefloor.

Upfront 049: I Love Acid

Berlin-based Marlon Hoffstadt's newest offering comes in the form of the four-part Smile EP, out on his own Retrograde label he co-runs with Natureboy Gold. Smile is a collaborative release with Paris Brightledge, a pioneer of Chicago house whose vocals were also on both "Paris Dub 1" and "2" by Paranoid London.

The release includes two original cuts from the duo, and their respective reworkings by Matteo Luis and Kris Wadsworth. "Smile" is counteracted with our pick, "Lies". This B-side shows off Hoffstadt's well versed club music rhetoric, with the track being pushed continually forward by propelling 303 melodies and heavily laden percussion. A story is explored in Paris' lyrics, as he discusses how coming from the ghetto doesn't always allow a freedom of feelings in life or in love.

Smile (RTGD002) drops on 1st February. Each copy comes with a full cover artwork by Hermann Reimer.

Nathan evolves Rooster's sprightly electronic feel in Loop The Loop, with the inclusion of vocals adding to the record's warm-heartedness. Our choice "Never is the Change" sustains the playful, pleasantly lackadaisical feel of the entire oeuvre, with its lopsided percussion and reverb-drenched, pitch-slid guitars. Cameroon-born Tala A.M returns to @africaseven with a remix package for 'Hot Koki', a track he sued James Brown for copying back in the 70s. London's Ben Hauke (@bjamin) offers a skipping house beat to accompany Tala's good-time vocals and afro percussion.

Mr. Mitch's Gobstopper Records open their 2016 releases with @loomsounds's aptly titled 'European Heartache' EP, set to be delivered in time for Valentine's.

Self proclaiming his sound as "cold war grime", Daniel Timms aka Loom - according to Passion of the Weiss - "looks back to the square wave synths of the Eskimo era, but also the technology that shaped it: hissy cassette tapes, scratched up dub plates, dodgy pirate radio signals and early computer plugins". 'Grade', his debut EP for Gobstopper, was lauded by THUMP, Juno Plus, XLR8R, DJ Mag and The FADER. 'European Heartache' explores deeper into his spacious, romantic take on instrumental grime.

"The core theme in my EP is a struggle with identity. What's my identity when society dictates how I should present myself because of my race, sex, religion, sexual preference. What's my identity, when the borders keep changing, when I've been displaced, fled my country because of war, what's my identity when my sex changes? Do I even know my own identity, or am i just portraying what I think is expected of me?"
