monoscene is an experimental electronic music project by Christoph Scholtes that uses a variety of artistic concepts and sound sources including modular synthesis, tape loops, acoustic elements, and field recordings to push creative boundaries of the electronic music genre. In addition to focusing on live performance and improvisation, monoscene explores production and composition techniques to realize an artistic vision and aesthetic that is deeply rooted in Ambient music. Born and raised in Germany, Christoph now lives in Colorado. He is inspired by the mountains and the local synth community.

Data Cult Audio 0213 - Monoscene

A very long mix and the best one out of 5 i made based around words from a swedish meteorologist (Martin Hedberg) who has written a book called “extreme weather”. He is talking about a 1,5 degrees celsius warmer global climate compared to the ice age when the temperature was 3 degrees colder. 25 minutes of a synth odyssey here. I don’t have permission to use these samples so may have to remove it or ask for permission eventually. This track is 25 minutes exactly and is an unmastered wav. file so sorry if you can’t stream this. May upload a smaller mp3 later:)

The basic tracks for some of these songs were scattered through other music I had recorded over the last ten years.  Quarantine has given me the time to hear some of this music with fresh ears. In most instances dozens of instrument tracks were stripped away to find some forgotten core that made me nod or smile.  Then I started again.  All new recording has been done since the start of lock down and tries to put a sound on the subtle dislocation of a global disaster that is mostly (for me) expressed in my daily life as an absence, a taking away rather than a presence; a distantly felt thing.

blochemy - Nia (Hibernate) Sampler

An improvisation made in my studio in April 2020 on the modular synth. It is largely based on ethnographic cylinder recordings from the Kodaly archive, made in April 1914. These small fragments are sampled with oscillators controlling the grain, loop size and time points of the samples. Pitch and envelope followers on the samples in turn control these oscillators and other physically modelled sounds. Yannis Kyriakides, Amsterdam, April 2020.

My sonopoem 'Coordinates' refers to the book 'Objective Becoming' by Bradford Skow, prof of Philosophy at MIT on the comparison of different theories of time, spacetime, robust passage and experiences.

Another chapter in my ongoing series of studio ambient mixes (not recorded live, produced over at least a month). This one is extra special for me as the title alludes to the fact that 2021 means I have been working in sound design for a decade. To help celebrate, I designed this new psychedelic journey, and layered it with field recordings from my collection of SFX I have captured going all the way back to my first upload folder from summer 2011. 

The track selection plays out like an anthology of some of the most talented ambient/sound design producers, blending eras and approaches ranging from pillars such as Biosphere, Stars of the Lid, and William Basinski - alongside emerging producers like Green-House and Zeze Wakamatsu. Molding everything together is a constantly shifting foundation of found sounds. The listener begins literally floating downstream as one subtle aquatic effect dissolves into another for the opening fifteen minutes. I also included many of my favorite audio finds including air traffic controllers, vintage game shows, NASA communications, nature documentaries, and religious A.M. radio hosts to list a few.

As a special bonus and thank you: I am pledging a $5 donation for every 350 plays of this mix* to Coalition for the Homeless (based in NYC)(*for the first 10,000 plays).

Ten Years Adrift [Studio Mix of Ambient, Experimental, Soundscape & Field Recordings]

This piece was composed to accompany the photo series Night Symphony by photographer Penelope Thomaidi. The series is set in the 19th district of Paris, one of the city's most densely populated areas. This piece uses field recordings from this area and it was meant to be played in a continuous loop.

Night Symphony

Brillman has been an electronic online musician during the last 20 years using many different names: Brillman, Controlfreak, freakcontrol, Red Karma, Atmosphere, Zero Loop, Pan64, Randomcontrol, geometric delay and Superfreak! Brillman mainly creates original sounds from hardware synths but also uses guitar, samplers, vocals or even poetry. He primarily utilizes a 4 to the floor approach. The aesthetics behind the music is about finding a balance between minimalism vs. depth & improvisation vs. programmed.
