Ken Ishii: A Pioneer of Japanese Techno
Ken Ishii debuted on the renowned Belgian techno label R&S Records in 1993, quickly rising to Number One on the UK's NME magazine techno chart. His first album, "JELLY TONES" (1995), was critically acclaimed, and the video for the single "EXTRA" won MTV's "Dance Video of the Year" in 1996. Internationally regarded as a top pioneer of Japanese techno, Ken produced the official theme song for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. In 2000, he was featured on the cover of Newsweek, symbolizing Japan's dynamic new culture. His work includes producing the soundtrack for the Japanese hit film "Whiteout" (2000) and contributing exclusive tracks to the cult-favorite video game Rez. Ken has performed at iconic venues worldwide and won the Best Techno DJ award at the 2004 Dance Music Awards in Ibiza. He regularly headlines major dance festivals, including Monegros (Spain) and WIRE (Japan). As a prolific producer, he founded his label, 70 Drums, in 2002 and released several albums, including "FUTURE IN LIGHT" (2002) and "SUNRISER" (2006). In 2012, Ken launched the project Ken Ishii Presents Metropolitan Harmonic Formulas and released "MUSIC FOR DAYDREAMS." His recent highlights include performing at the Nintendo SWITCH Presentation World Premiere in 2017 and releasing the album "MÖBIUS STRIP" in 2019. In 2020, he produced the official theme track for PAC-MAN's 40th anniversary. Ken continues to expand his creative reach, composing soundtracks for Netflix's anime series "Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune" (2023) and the VR game "C-Smash VRS" (2023-2024). He has also launched a noh & techno collaboration performance series, TECHNOH LAB., with noh actor Manjiro Tatsumi. Beyond music, Ken co-brews his own craft beer, “KIKK-IPA,” with RISE & WIN Brewing Co., winning silver prizes at the International Beer Cup in 2022 and 2023. Currently, he is more enthusiastic about making music than ever, releasing new EPs, collaborating with various artists, and touring globally. He is working on a collaboration album with a jazz musician, set for release in late 2024.

Here is a set recording from one of my most valuable events, CODA by Ratherlost x Pax-Roama at Lofi. I put a massive effort into that night, thinking about the past and future of my DJ career. I communicated best with the dancers and could express myself in a way that only I could. Sometimes I feel insecure about my life as a DJ. CODA gave me all the answers.

SPEED is back with another round of the Artist Invitation Mix series, featuring an incredible artist. We're excited to present a mix from https://soundcloud.com/i-am-seimei representing Tokyo for this edition of the series.

Seimei is a Producer, DJ, and A&R who co-runs the Japanese label TREKKIE TRAX, which has been releasing dance music from Tokyo for over a decade. He has performed at various venues both in Japan and abroad, organized label nights, and played at notable festivals like Fuji Rock Festival, ULTRA JAPAN, EDC Japan, and SXSW.

Seimei also joined London-based PC Music’s first North American tour. In 2015, he provided guest mixes for LuckyMe on Rinse FM and Nina Las Vegas’ show on triple J.

As a producer, his track featured on LuckyMe’s Rinse FM show was included in a compilation by Movel Traxx, a label run by Big Dope P. In 2021, after returning to Japan, he contributed a guest mix for Ben UFO’s Rinse FM show and released his debut solo album, “A Diary From The Crossing,” on WET TRAX (Canada). 

In 2022, Seimei released his mini-album “The Truth Of The Myth” on TREKKIE TRAX, and in 2024, his EP "Tokyo Funky Breaks" was premiered by DJ Mag and Mixmag, released on New York's Sorry Records.

Our friend from Taiwan, Sonia Calico released a new DJ mix for TREKKIE TRAX MIX series for the release party of her “Moonlight EP” More Time Records, in Tokyo this Friday at R-Lounge, Shibuya.
Sonia Calico has released her single “Change, Reset” featuring R&B singer PRINCI in 2021 on TREKKIE TRAX and has firmly established herself as a leading figure in Asia’s electronic music scene.
Enjoy the new grooves created by this Taipei-based DJ, one of Asia's leading DJs, who is influenced not only by House and Techno, but also by UK Bass music, African music, Mandopop and traditional oriental music heard in her home Taiwan.
