A Dirty Love Story #12 - Waking Dreams - Black Rock City - Mixed By Isaiah Martin

Today we embark on a special journey with our dear friend Amer from Old City. Old City has been close to Amaya since the very beginning and we have enjoyed our relationship for a number of years. We are so happy to have you today sharing this beautiful and eclectic mix, perfectly balanced and mixed. It truly shows how deep and thoughtful Old City's musical storytellings evolve. 
As usual we get to know more about Old City in our interview at the end.

"While creating a set, I process a lot of what I go through and make sense of my journey by drawing meaning from the stories that reveal themselves. What is this song about? What does it make me feel? Is there a story that I can draw an emotional attachment from? A lot of realizations have come about this past year as I ask myself these questions. The deeper question being masked by that is really: how am i feeling today? Through that constant self assessment, I get to know myself a little better, peel the layers and understand what each phase means to me. I get to know myself best when I’m creating. Through music, through starting to explore photography and through writing, I’m expanding the channels in which I can absorb, process, learn and then share. Old City is my attempt at doing so. 

As many people already know, I started playing alone for over a year now without the partner that I started this all with - a gap that has forced me to ask myself endless questions and go through a lot of internal growth. I have a lot of emotions towards having to fill that gap and losing a partner in this journey, but every “positive” or “negative” experience exists to teach us something. We ask ourselves the hardest questions when it’s a “negative” experience, and sometimes can go a little less self aware when we’re on that “positive” momentum. I went in a different direction musically and used it as an opportunity to self discover, experiment and increase my range. I played disco, house, minimal, acid jazz, blues, afro funk, progressive house. All blended in a way that felt unique to my taste and felt right to the ambience of where I was playing. But I perhaps also escaped what reminded me of the original essence of why Old City came to be and I continued to distract myself away from the hardest question.

This set for Amaya’s radio show is my deepest and most personal, emotional reflection and I want it to tell you what I love, what I truly care about, and what I am starting to understand Old City to be, authentically me. Some elements, particularly the important message during the closing of this set was something very special I wanted to share during my sunset time slot on the Maxa Art Car at Burning Man this year, but that set was cancelled last minute and I was left heartbroken that I couldn’t share that message then and there. But naturally I immediately knew this radio show with Amaya was the right home for it. There is a 45 mins interview at the end that I shed a bit of light on this as well and a first open heart discussion about my story and beliefs. *Songs With Words* — It's been three long years since I've released a set and while I don't know what I've been waiting for, luckily something about this one felt a bit different. During a week of relentless work, this was my first moment of play. As the clock struck midnight on Tuesday evening we were in the midst of a wild ride: from Diplo and Carlita at sunset, to Unders at sunrise, I had the pleasure of bridging the night amongst a sea of friends and familiar faces. Sometimes in the land of singing computers, it's nice to hear a few songs with words.

Today’s special brings you some Californian sunshine to heat up this freezing European Monday! Please join us in welcoming Dear Humans with their deep and soulful Sunshine Fizz!

Dear Humans, based in Los Angeles, and consisting of DJ, producer and instrumentalist Epstein as well as vocalist and songwriter Alex Who?, refer to themselves as an intergalactic electro band.  

Originally from Colorado, Epstein has been a musician and producer for over 20 years. Originally an instrumentalist, he was first exposed to electronic music in 1997 and started djing house music in the Denver club scene by 2002. Epstein has been bringing together the sounds of Ibiza, Tulum, and Burning Man into melodic, dance floor-bound beats that are infused with live instruments and synthesizers. In March 2018, Epstein launched NCTRNL Recorcds which has quickly established itself as one of LA’s top deep house labels.

Alex Who? Is a Dutch-Tanzanian Singer, songwriter, actress, model and performer. From a very young age Who? sang and acted, which led to her attending the Amsterdam school for Theatre and the Performing Arts while also traveling the world performing in clubs, leading a five-piece Jazz band and presenting a nationwide music television programme in Turkey. After graduating Who? was awarded various roles in Dutch television series and film before her demo caught the attention of Craig Kallman, CEO of Atlantic records.
That triggered her move to the states, getting signed by Empire Records and releasing two EP’s in the past few years.

Dear Humans created its first waves with their release “Like You” a few months back. It hasn't been one year since Corey and Alex joined forces and we already can't wait to get more of this fantastic combination of smokey, soulful vocals paired with deep electronic grooves. And, since they spend quite some time in the studio lately, we're excite to what's coming next!
