“SUKEBAN” (スケバン/女番/スケ番) Now Available on all platforms.

I am very excited to present “SUKEBAN” my latest sound design and video editing project. 

“The term ‘sukeban’ was created by Japanese police to categorise and explain the rise of teenage all-female street gangs in the 1960s. Meaning ‘delinquent girl’ or ‘girl leader’, the sukeban were groups of teenage girls that protested against society with their altered fashion, radical solidarity and being involved in offences such as, violence, theft and drug use. But these gangs of rebel girls used their actions and their fashion to prove that being strong and being a woman wasn’t contradictory.” (1)

When I first read about the subculture “Sukeban”I was instantly inspired; having selected various extracts from articles explaining the importance of the movement, I ran the selected phrases through an AI text to voice software, gaining a clear direction for the project. My my sound production includes recordings from a Vcv rack patch and @behringer CRAVE synthesizer.

Recorded live on Holy Saturday at the infamous Snax Party in Berghain, this is the first 3 hours of an extended set. "Once a year in honor of the old Ostgut tradition, Berghain closes its doors to the straight crowd and unleashes a no-holds barred gay marathon where anything goes. Due to the circumstances of it being a different crowd and different vibe, I figured I'd upload the set which is a bit harder and funkier than I typically play." -DZ
