Situationism

Psycho Killer (Talking Heads cover)

'The Long Climb Down' is a mixed genre track inspired by my past hill climbing days. The exhilaration and peacefullness on reaching the top and then the sometimes lenghly journey back down, tired but still running on adrenaline. And so the piece is in four sections. Going up - reaching the top - going down - walking home fullfilled.

NO HESITATION (Passion Arcade)

Dipping into the archives for this one, but one of my personal favorites when I played with gifted violinist Julie Evans many years ago. It came out of an improv session where we would brainstorm musical ideas and then refine the ones we liked.  The transfer from cassette tape worked pretty well with not a lot of hiss or tape flutter.  
I've come to understand that joy and melancholy are more soul mates than opposites, both being able to bring tears at a moment's notice.  The "joy of being" in all its complexity and simplicity is a paradox to be celebrated.

*** SKINNER PIGEONS ***

The Skinner pigeons displayed superstitious learning
when they learned to perform actions
unrelated to rewards.
In fact the trays that offered them delicious nutrients
were just opened by a timer
set to fire from time to time.
And so these birds would keep repeating senseless dances,
empty swingings, useless stances,
thinking they were in command.
Believing that they were the ones there in command.  

This begs the question:
What about success prescriptions,
secret methods, clever fictions?
Do they really lift our lives?
As we go forward pushing doorways, shouting orders,
firing people, building borders,
maybe we're not better than those helpless birds 
that swing their heads or flap their wings
thinking this entails the feeding
that is coming anyway.
The random feeding that is coming anyway.

Still we keep searching for the reasons of decaying,
for the meaning of our praying,
for the guilty butterfly.
We keep denying to be lost in mindless fighting,
running blind amidst the lightning,
waiting for the final strike.
We want the answers that will feed our understanding
that will bring us consolation
that will give a reason why.
We want the answers that will give a reason why.
