Khruangbin is a three-piece band from Texas, formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums.

Mark and DJ's roots are in R&B, Hip Hop and Gospel having played within the same gospel band for years. Both professional musicians, Mark began teaching Laura how to play bass in the summer of 2009. As such, Laura quickly developed a huge passion for the instrument and the aesthetic it brought to music she loved. Having worked studiously on developing her skills, both Mark and Laura were invited to tour with Ninja Tune's YPPAH supporting Bonobo across his 2010 American tour. 

The tour galvanised the two of them to start making music together more seriously, sowing the first seeds of Khruangbin. Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - Khruangbin literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - the two took a trip to a barn deep in the Texas countryside and jammed for the entire weekend, developing a sound which was steeped the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration. Khruangbin was formed, with D.J. the natural go to for drums.

Having kept in touch, Bonobo included Khruangbin's 'A Calf Born In Winter' on his 2013 'Late Night Tales' compilation. In addition to increasing the Stateside following the band has built, the release has helped Khruangbin in topping both the US & UK 'Last FM' fastest growing artists whilst 'A Calf Born In Winter' continues to be one of the most popular single downloads from the compilation. The band recently signed to LNT offshoot Night Time Stories, with an album planned in 2015.

Weihnachts-Compilations gibt es wie Sand am Meer. Den altbekannten, von nahezu jedem Radiosender gespielten Weihnachtssongs droht jedoch seit einigen Jahren immer früher die Vergabe eines eher unrühmlichen Prädikates: Sie werden aufgrund ihres hochfrequentierten Abspielens als schlicht und ergreifend „nervig“ bezeichnet. Oftmals ist bereits Wochen vor dem eigentlichen Fest der Zenit an musikalischer Weihnachtsvorfreude überschritten. Selbst ein “funky” oder “groovy” im Titel einer Weihnachts-CD vermag hin und wieder nicht zu halten was es verspricht. Desillusioniert von derartigen “filler-no-killer” Compilations war dies für die Initiatoren Jan Kohlmeyer und Tobias Kirmayer somit der ausschlaggebenden Punkt, ein musikalisches Projekt mit neuen, unverbrauchten, kurz „außergewöhnlichen“ Rare Groove Weihnachtssongs zu realisieren.

Die Zusammenarbeit von Jan und Tobias (Tramp Records) begann im Herbst 2010. Nach akribischer Durchforstung der Plattensammlungen fanden sich über 50 Weihnachts-Songs aus dem Genre Funk, Soul und Jazz zusammen. Selbst diese engere Auswahl enthielt noch eine beachtliche Anzahl an Songs, die bereits auf anderen Weihnachts-Alben erschienen sind. Dennoch ergab sich, dass eine kleine, aber feine Auswahl dieser Sound-Raritäten ihre Aufmerksamkeit gewinnen konnte. Unter ihnen auch fünf Songs, deren Rechte bei zwei der weltweit größten Plattenfirmen liegen. Leider wurde es den beiden 60s-Raritäten-Visionären aufgrund der ominösen Lizensierungs-Politik nicht ermöglicht, die Rechte für diese Songs zu erhalten, wodurch die Auswahl von stattlichen 18 auf umso gewaltigere 13 Tracks schrumpfte. „Zu wenig!“ mag hier einer meinen. Aber mal unter uns: es wäre ein Leichtes gewesen, diese Compilation mit zusätzlichen Füll-Tracks auf weit über eine Stunde zu strecken, doch damit wäre Jan's und Tobias’ “Kampfansage an die musikalische Desertifikation – zurück zur musikalischen Diversifikation“ quasi von ihnen selbst untergraben worden.

Also weiter im Text: Santa's Funk &amp; Soul Christmas Party reiht sich somit wunderbar in die bisherigen Veröffentlichungen aus dem Hause Tramp ein. Alle Songs sind von Künstlern, die es bedauerlicherweise in ihren musikalischen Hochzeiten nie zum verdienten Ruhm geschafft haben. Und dennoch steht die Qualität jedes einzelnen Songs und somit die Compilation als Kumulation dieser „funky jewels“ einem Weihnachtsalbum eines James Browns oder Lou Rawls in nichts nach. Ganz im Gegenteil: die Auswahl der Songs garantiert ein Weihnachtsfest der anderen Art. Wer hier nicht zumindest mit dem linken kleinen Fußzeh in der dicken Wollsocke mitwippt hat definitiv die Winterstiefel zu eng geschnürt.

Im CD-Booklet sowie auf der LP finden sich Scans aller 45RPM Singles, sowie Infos zu jedem Interpreten. Die LP hat ein Klappcover und ist auf 500 Stück limitiert.
