Ten years ago I co-authored a paper in statistical physics about chaotic behavior in connected oscillator networks. I investigated cross-modulating networks of up to 200 oscillators, and how different degrees of interconnectedness and the strength of the connections affected the behavior of the resulting signals, with respect to chaos. That is, I calculated the Lyapunov exponents numerically, using a large computer cluster and large numbers of randomly generated network configurations.

Here, I have made a simple real-time implementation of this idea. In a fully 8-oscillator network with random frequencies, the strengths of feedback connections are gradually increased and decreased. Different periodic and chaotic regions in the state space can clearly be heard.

The piece is made for live performance, and sounds different each time. Here, four rounds of random networks have been recorded.

Extra Shapes est constitué de trois partitions autonomes et simultanées : une pour danseurs, une pour haut-parleurs et une pour dispositif lumineux. La performance occupe un rectangle divisé en trois bandes d'égale largeur. Chaque bande correspond à un médium : le son occupe la bande frontale, la lumière celle du milieu, la danse celle du fond. La pièce consiste en une séquence de 20 minutes, répétée 4 fois. A chaque répétition, le public a un point de vue différent sur la pièce. 
La composition sonore pour 8 haut-parleurs utilise au maximum la spatialisation, de manière à ce que la perception de l'auditeur varie en fonction de la position de celui-ci.

The chant is: Cherubikon by Manuel Chrysaphes (c. 1458), First Mode (Chanted by Spyridon Antonopoulos, Dimos Papatzalakis, and Nektarios Antoniou). This Cherubikon was chanted in a tiny church and is a good demonstration of the kind of music that was sung in Thessaloniki in the fifteenth century. The extended notes reverberate around the small chapel. The dome of the chapel is painted with scenes from the mass, each containing images of singers.
