Big Search is the alter ego of Los Angeles harmony slinger Matt Popieluch.  To date, Big Search has released a limited edition pressing of the home recorded Lay of the Land as well as singles for "Middle Man" and "Distant Shore". Due to his short attention span, his latest, Role Reversal, was on its way to "lost album" status when Popieluch was encouraged by a few friends and Jaunt Records to bring it to light. 

The album was recorded by Matt and Michael Harris after their working hours at White Iris studios in 2009-2011, a time of personal upheaval and uncertainty. This period simultaneously saw the dissolution of his former band, Foreign Born, as well as a longterm relationship, but also included the meeting of his soon-to-be wife. As a result the album surges with emotional cross currents, working in tandem and, at times, against each other. It is reflective of Big Search's large-scale embrace of all incoming forces, and their interconnectedness. Blending points of view, time, memories, dreams and direct autobiography often within the same song, he says he was pushing for "new levels of both self examination and natural channeling". 

Role Reversal has a deliberate, bare sound, with sparse, unembellished rhythms lending to the power of the intense and straightforward subject matter, exposing sensitive truths to the elements. That being said, the album is lousy with harmonies, horns, woodwinds, and synthesizers, including contributions from Garrett Ray, Luke Top and Brad Caulkins (Fool's Gold), Jason Quever (Papercuts), Sandra Vu (SISU, Dum Dum Girls) Andy Creighton (The World Record) and guest vocals by Cass McCombs and Jack Name.

Dust, Glitterbug’s fourth studio album, sees the artist and producer continue his path of exploring musical frontiers beyond the beaten tracks of current electronic dance music. 
Dust is an album about hidden remains and traces. It follows things and people that were, past lives and stories that silently echo through deserts fields, overgrown forests, urban decay, and our homes, staircases and attics.
It’s not by chance that ‘Dust’ is released on Gold Panda’s NOTOWN Recordings label. Not only is there a loving friendship and previous collaborations between the two, but ‘Dust’ also picks up the pieces where Gold Panda left off with “Half Of Where You Live” that celebrated modern urbanity and man made things. 
Glitterbug’s ‘Dust’ takes this notion a step further and explores the urban shadows of the forgotten, the stories of our cities that remain untold, past landscapes that evaporated and memories left behind over time.
If Glitterbug is known for his dense, extended, autobiographical journeys, this album turns like pages of a story book, visiting different people and places, traveling across continents and beyond time, intertwined and interconnected.
Glitterbug carries his renowned visual language with each track exploring an almost perceptible location, so specific you can tell the hour by the sun’s angle, and feel the wind hit your face carrying a particular smell. It’s a travelogue of the ghosts and spirits that never had a chance to come back.


1st Of July

Announcing the onset of night, Driftmachine —a Berlin-based duo comprised of Andreas Gerth (Tied & Tickled Trio) and Florian Zimmer (Saroos)— have created Nocturnes, a psychoactive, dream-inducing stimulant of sorts: Evoking and maintaining a trancelike state, the duo’s six-part journey into the dark was originally inspired by reading The Rest Is Noise and listening to the music discussed in Alex Ross’ seminal book. The resulting soundscapes, written and recorded since 2012, redefine the lines between insomnia and slumber, between wraithlike dub grooves gone awry, the dancing flicker of a slack-joint bedside lamp, and eerie electronics.

Nocturnes is essentially comprised of six studies in precision: perfectly symmetrical structures that slowly spread their bass-heavy wings, sprawl like digital fungi, shift shape and – paradoxically – seem to drift and to obey the two captains at the helm. It’s an album of hypnotic and mesmerizing electronic landscapes based on various interlocked layers of rhythm. “Getting deeper into the world of modular systems introduced us to new ways of creating music,” they say, and it also allowed Gerth and Zimmer to redefine and rearrange styles and genres they generally feel drawn to – dub, riddims, anything with bass really –, so the heavy bass and percussive elements of Nocturnes don’t come in the colors you’d expect them to: Driftmachine’s palette stays true to the colors of night, a massive scale of gray.

With its meticulously displaced details and intricate harmony layers, Nocturnes also evokes the electronic avant-garde of the mid-70s, think Cluster during the band’s Zuckerzeit era. Nocturnes keeps the balance between intense, dramatic metrics and rather complex, modulated melodies. Also nodding to Krzysztof Komeda’s compositions (especially his score for Rosemary’s Baby) and the haunting, uncanny vibes of Raime, Nocturnes won’t let you sleep: “To us, the album sounds like staying awake the whole night; it unites all the different moods one might go through.”
