Tango

What if Bajofondo had been born 50 years earlier and had been composing in the golden age of  tango. This short piece has been written to illustrate a musicality lesson at Bramshaw working with the contemporary electro-tango Pa' Bailar. On hearing that some dancers were dismayed that the class would be working with a non-traditional tango, I wanted to help dancers discover that beauty can also be found in the layers of the music. I think Pa Bailar's simple and haunting melody would have been the pride of a 1950's composer. Yes, perhaps it is beaten into submission by the heavy drum and bass accompaniment but, never-the-less it is part of the musical work. It is possible for a dancer to filter out the heavy rhythm and dance to this beautiful melody.

Is it possible to write tango music by committee?

In January 2016 at a Tango UK musicality class at Bramshaw, the subject was an invitation to students to compose their own tango.

The class content is the result of 5 years development of a teaching process to guide dancers who are not musicians to a better, deeper understanding of Argentine tango music. There is nothing like a sense of ownership to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of a 'treasure'. What greater treasure could there be for dance students than to dance to a piece of music that they have created.

The process was facilitated by Steve Morrall, a life long musician, tango dancer and teacher. He 'orchestrated' the production of a tango in a "lego brick" component process. The class was split into groups of rhythm makers and melody makers. Each group brainstormed tango-esque beats and melodies and then listened as Steve auditioned the ideas on the piano before testing the 'danceablility' of their ideas as dancers.

In this way the group produced an A theme and a B theme. The initial ideas were notated for solo piano and then orchestrated for piano, bandoneon, violin, cello and double bass using Logic Pro.  Some time in the future we hope to get a community tango orchestra to perform it.
