They are two musical identities that form a unique blend of techno's cutting-edge. Hodone's raw percussive flair and UFO95's grit were omnipresent earlier this month.

Under the new alias 'Civic Instruction' the pair holds tension like no other. June 1st was a testament to their evolving sound and approach to live sets as they seek to translate their performative chemistry into punching frequencies. An intense hour of subtle narration awaits as we're proud to host it as our twenty-third podcast series installment.

Let's head back to Fuse on January 4th for two hours of technical, percussive and ambient soul. Intertwining minimalist techno, UK-influenced bass, and polyrhythmic grooves, he kept the listener focused in dreamscapes as he reflected his influences from labels like Nous’klaer, Spazio Disponibile, and his distinct attention to unconventional time signatures or drum work. Right on cue to support the release of his newest EP on SK_eleven, here comes Manchester via Berlin's own Setaoc Mass with a banger of a mix to break June in proper, pedal to the metal. Exponent of a sound both intrinsically rugged yet layered to mind-altering effect, the British producer has been dishing out unstoppable slices of hi-velocity techno laced with a signature stripped-back, psychedelic edge. This new RYC podcast doesn’t veer off from such a direction and we’re graced with a two-hour mind trip boasting both bass-driven warehouse impact and an elegantly-woven tapestry of abrasive grooves, leaning by turn towards atmospheric elation and on other occasions pushing in the direction of utter fibrous, steel-coated industrial pound. The result is a wilder than wild ride down a smouldering pit of acid-washed hard hitters. Brutal.

For this set I played on 4 CDJ 3000’s and a V10 mixer, using both of its internal effects processors. For every No Way Back set, and for most sets, I try to prepare new hardware remasters and edits of things that I think would be fascinating recontextualized in this setting. But for NWB, it is even more special, a peak moment, so I try to have new records I’m working on in the studio to test out. For this set that means the hardware mixes I’ve been working on for Torrvo and for Andy Toth can be tested, I’m working on this hardware mixing and remastering tone palate, so I spread that to some edits to give them a whole new power. Playing at No Way Back cannot be put into words, though we try every year, it really is inexplicable without experiencing it. It’s the environment you most want to be in, the space is totally transformed, the sound is dialed in, the audience is so ready, very giving and open, and the feedback you get is incredible. People are up for a ride – we start at the Tangent and end up going to the other side of the universe. Freedom within and without. There’s no place I’d rather be, so I thought I’d share this much sooner than we usually do. Enjoy the ride.

Released in October 2017, this mix was previously only available on a limited cassette from Brevity Tapes and featured a separate mix from Karl Meier on the flip side. The approach was to do something slightly different than the average podcast or live mix, instead reaching a bit deeper into our collections and present a dynamic narrative with the framework of a 45 minute cassette tape. This one was super fun to put together and features a range of IDM and electro tracks from Dynamo, Andrea Parker, Aphex Twin, Peder Mannerfelt, DMX Krew, Sleeparchive, and more.
