London's @giuliatess has been making waves for a while now, with releases on Jamz Supernova's Future Bounce label and a standout addition to Mor Elian's Fever AM compilation "I Hope You Are Well During These Strange Times".

Her deeply unique brooding, bassy and polyrhythmic sound has struck a chord and seen her garner upcoming bookings at The Cause and Fabric, while she's also found time to launch a side project named Mala Femmina. We're overjoyed to host a mix from her bringing together a wide range of flavours, expect to hear loads more from her...

Explorations Mix #13 - Giulia Tess

Despite nightlife coming to a standstill over the last year or so, it's been a privilege to see many emerging talents coming to the fore and getting the recognition they deserve. 

London-based activist, DJ and radio host Charles Olisanekwu AKA DJ Winggold has been putting in some mileage over the last few years with his Unbound parties and Netil Radio show, but 2020 saw him gather even more steam; not just through his musical activities but as an active voice for pushing forward cultural and social change, within the industry and further afield — all while holding down a day job as a lawyer. 

His sets are a treat, pulling from a vast array of influences and keeping you on tenterhooks for what's round the corner: you're just as likely to hear dream pop and jazz as you are UKG, electro and grime. But it isn't just about the music, it's about the principles that guide it. Much of Charles' musical work is steered by Afrofuturism, as well as the concepts of identity and self-determinism; in particular how these intersect with the experience of being a minority.

What's special about his outlook is that, although he's pushing his own musical output, working a tasking job and being a voice for change in the industry, he still manages to find the time to bring up, support and push his contemporaries, giving them a platform wherever possible.

Now, anyone who knows Charles will know he does not do things in half measures, and his mix for us is evidence of that. Coming in at a whopping two and a half hours, he takes no prisoners on this one, leading us down a murky path through jungle, acid, electro, broken rhythms, dubstep, grime and techno, with tracks that speak to his personal past, present and future.

DJ Winggold: The 'Shine A Light On' Mix

Mexico-based @tristanarp blessed us with a truly out of this world guest mix, making for a stellar show that's undoubtedly the best yet. 

The @humanpitch co-founder (the Brooklyn-based label he runs with @simisea) is known for his unique polyrhythmic sound that evokes images of other realms. Drawing from a wide range of inspirations, it's unlike any out there with his mix showcasing his depth and breadth of knowledge.

DJ Winggold's on in the first half with a mix of ambient, dancehall-tinged tracks and more. The whole thing's a treat!

Unbound Riddims w/DJ Winggold & Tristan Arp - 12th July 2021

After an extended hiatus, we're back on the Explorations Mix Series, this time with one we've been waiting to put out for a good while now!

We're v pleased to welcome @louuss to the series and he did NOT come to mess about with this one. Hosting his flawlessly curated monthly radio show If It Moves on Vandelay Radio, he can be found spinning anything from dub techno to juke to bouncy pop edits.

He brings that same energy to this mix, going in hard but playing with the energy levels and contrasting dark and light moods. It's a phenomenal mix - hope you enjoy as much as we do!

Explorations Mix #14 - Nolou

Sircle Mix 008: DJ Winggold

We've got another fine addition to the Explorations Mix series, this time from the endlessly enthusiastic supporter of underground bass music @itswilljb.

Firing out mixes at a frankly terrifying rate, his smooth, downtempo mix for the @pollination-uk series caught our attention. He's on top form for his mix here, pulling together a wide array of dark, glitchy percussive heat in a way that feels fresh and foreboding, yet never oppressive.

Constantly flying the flag for the @more-cowbell crew, he comes correct with a selection of tunes from around the globe and from some of the best labels about. Showing a deep knowledge and passion for various sounds, this shows why he's one to watch!

Explorations Mix #15 - Bingle Beats

Next mix in the series comes from @s_o_w, a key member and co-founder of the @newscenery crew. New Scenery share similar DNA to Unbound in that they address the lack of diversity in electronic music by making space for LGBT, non-binary and minority individuals.

Their musical policy is similarly open-ended and is *fully* on show in this mix, with a wide range of colourful sounds, sassy edits and swaggy tunes stitched together in a collage-esque manner. Most of all tho, it keeps the Unbound spirit by being FUN. Enjoy folks x

Explorations Mix #16 - SOW

Capturing a collection of beautiful moments suspended in time, here's a 2 hr recording of DJ Winggold's set for the @maplecuts crew at the start of the year.

Heating up the crowd ahead of superstar Marie Montexier and before Blasha & Allatt tore the roof off with a ferocious closing set, the steamy vibes perfectly set the scene for the evening ahead.

Perfectly calibrated to the intimate confines of Venue MOT, the inimitable blend of deep, spiritual techno and skewed bass and gqom had the crowd chomping at the bit. Relive the vibes with this special recording.

DJ Winggold is one of the core minds behind Unbound Events, an events platform founded in 2017 and designed to spotlight minorities and raise awareness of social issues. In addition to their events, DJ Winggold spreads the uncompromising Unbound message through their monthly Netil Radio show, contributions to panels and discussions, and regular writing exploring cultural history and the intersection with race and identity.

Having spoken at length on the topic of Afrofuturism, he’s since become an inadvertent advocate on the topic. An aesthetic that informs all his creative pursuits, including his DJ’ing style, he’ll next be seen discussing the it in the form of the pan-African creative explosion at Amsterdam Dance Event.

For CoziMix07 we welcome Dj Winggold! who is the curator of unbound events and unbound riddims on Netil Radio which is a London based party and radio show pushing the boundaries of electronic music whilst spreading joy across platforms. His emotive yet energetic sounds harness our ears, bodies and souls leaving us in a psychedelic realm. Charles has incredible power on and off the dance floor, promoting a more inclusive and innovative community. 

1. How and why did you get into producing / dj’ing?
I’ve been running events under Unbound Events since 2017, with it first starting as an outlet to pour my energies into after going through a really deep and dark depressive period. I initially didn’t have any plans to DJ, but it quickly became clear that there was a specific emotional strain of dark, tribalistic but varied and boundary-less sound that I wanted to push, so I taught myself to DJ a few months after first starting.

My first gig was at the 2nd ever Unbound in February 2018 then things have just escalated from there. I had a year where I solidly dabbled in Ableton as a way to further channel my sadboi energy into music, but I got to a point where I was too busy to keep it going. Maybe some point in future…

2. Who, What/where was your most coziest gig you've been to or experienced and why?

A real core memory for me was seeing Ben Howard at Shepherd’s Bush Empire around a decade ago when I was at uni. Despite being a moderately sized venue, he still managed to make it feel intimate and I distinctly remember the crowd experiencing the show in hushed awe during a few songs, without anyone making a peep.

More recently, I went down to Iklectic for the first time and saw Ulla perform live. She’s one of my favourite ambient artists ever and it was beautiful seeing everyone engage deeply with it, either sprawled out on the floor, seated with eyes closed or watching attentively.

3. Do you consider yourself an introvert or extrovert in the industry?

Ha, I’m pretty extroverted by nature but defs have introvert tendencies and need plenty of alone time to recharge. I lowkey find it pretty exhausting always being ‘on’, especially when in club spaces where I go to in order to unwind and *not* talk about or think about music industry stuff. 

Pretty interesting observation is how the industry favours those with more extroverted personalities, especially with the way social media and rampant self-promotion fits in with things. I got into all this for v nerdy introspective reasons and have been basically just creating for myself, so it’s been an adjustment getting used to navigating so many people.

4. If you had to choose 1 track to vibe out too forever, what would it be?

Literally impossible to choose just one track lol. One that I’ve endlessly played a lot over the past year and a bit, though, is ‘Summer’ by Pub - it’s 16 mins of bliss that simultaneously feels like an eternity and leaves you wanting more. Truly one of the greatest dub-techno influenced tracks of all time and one that never gets old.

What is your routine when preparing for a gig / production/writing session? Do you have any special remedies/ mental/physical prep/ places to go to? :)

I try (and usually fail) to prepare quite rigorously for gigs, planning out a rough narrative I’d like to paint but leaving enough space for spontaneity and changes in vibe based on the crowd. In reality, I’m usually prepping until the v last minute before the gig and then any vague plan usually goes straight out the window within the first few tunes! :’)

On the rare occasions when I’m not insanely pressed for time (the joys of having a busy full time job, woo), I like to meditate and stretch ahead of a set, setting intentions for the set and making sure I feel fully connected to my body so I can better connect with the energy of the crowd. I’ve also recently started listening to non-dance music to cleanse my ears before playing - shoutout to FKA Twigs and shoegaze music.

DJ Winggold is joined by good pal and member of the London-based Collectivism crew @trufanegra.

After initially becoming acquainted at Freerotation festival a number of years ago, the two bonded over a shared love of music, culture, community and utilising them in order to make an impact.

Despite having a lot of common ground in musical taste, both their tastes also diverge quite heavily - this show sees them meeting in the middle for a glorious b2b soundtracking the sun going down!

Origins Tapes 107 - DJ Winggold

Big one here. DJ Winggold was joined in the Netil studio this month by none other than the legendary @itsallhalal, purveyor of all things deep and hypnotic. A regular at the most esteemed dancefloors across the globe, she's known for her intuitive sets traversing a wide spectrum of sounds, all tied together by contrasts between dark, dreamy and atmospheric. 

A true multidisciplinary artist, she runs the Mutual Dreaming party series and label, founded North American festival Sustain Release and is also known for her fearsome, shapeshifting live sets. 

Live and direct from the studio, she contributed a typically stellar mix, bringing a lush and deep selection of techno and electro before DJ Winggold heated things up with an expansive set of ravey, psychedelic bass and techno. It's a special one x

Following a short hiatus from the Netil Radio airwaves, DJ Winggold returns to Unbound Riddims show with an all-time great contribution to the show.

An improvised entry, the show features a bewitching brew of airy, dreamy dub techno, featherlight bass and crystalline techno. It all comes together to make a comforting massage for the ears before heading into darker, more pulsating territory in the second half.

No.12 in our series comes from the mighty @foldldn resident @Jamesnewmarch, full on technical whizz and fearsome presence behind the decks. Having made a name for himself with diverse, nuanced no-holds barred sets, he slows things riiiight down to bring you all a tasty chuglection of sleazy, grinding tunes mixed with class and finesse.

Before the pandemic, he'd been gaining serious steam alongside FOLD bossman @voicedrone, taking the energy from their monthly UNFOLD party as far afield as Berlin, Ukraine and Poland. Prior to joining the FOLD family, he was resident for afterhours party Jaded at Corsica Studios, taking audiences right to the edge with slamming techno.
