Last week I had the pleasure to play at Munich's Radio 80000 for the OYE Records takeover. Inside a lot of dirty analogue sounds and a travel through wave, electro and synth pop. Part 3 starts with a bang and “In der Weltraumdiskothek” by mysterious Dresden based producer DC Production. If you’ve ever wondered what music would be played at the night club of the Ewoks this tune might be the answer. “Nuthin Wrong Here” is Scherbe to the bone with his stumbling beats, dirty synths and heartbreaking samples. We also have a big heart for Disco here at the valley and this is proven by Sandrow M & K_Chico who put a smile on our face with catchy guitar licks, bouncy bass lines and cheesy vocals. “Space Dancer”, what more could you desire? Finally, Filburt from Leipzig brings things down to a peaceful end with his slightly melancholic “My Time”.

C-Beams is the new joint project by Break SL and Sandrow M. who got to know each other during their activities for Uncanny Valley. “Thumbling” is the first result of these jam-sessions. The track starts out with warm synth pads over a thrilling drum arrangement with a slightly stumbling bass drum. All of a sudden synthesizer-chords come into play. While these chords are staccato-like at first, they merge into a laid-back solo. We can’t refrain from calling that pretty deep.

For the first Carhartt WIP Radio show of 2024, we’re focusing on the Dresden-based independent record label @uncanny-valley-dresden.
 
Launched by four friends as a way of platforming music by close peers and collaborators, the label released its first record in 2010 – a dynamic house-driven compilation featuring Jacob Korn, Cuthead, Thomas Fröhlich, and Break SL. 
 
Almost fifteen years later, Uncanny Valley has grown into an international, multidisciplinary effort, collaborating with artists and musicians alike from Brooklyn, Berlin, and New York City. And with the addition of sub-labels Rat Life and shtum, its sound has remained just as diverse, spanning house, hip-hop, acid, and synth-wave.
 
For this month’s episode, Uncanny Valley created a mix which delves into its eclectic back catalog, highlighting favorite tracks alongside some hidden gems. Expect a journey through jazz-funk, hip hop, ambient, Italo and techno. 

As ever, the mix is accompanied by an interview, where Uncanny Valley’s founders discuss the need for labels in the modern music industry, Dresden’s rich electronic music history, and new projects in the pipeline. Read the interview via via www.carhartt-wip.com/journal/music.

Starting as a label that served basically as a platform for their friends’ music in 2010, Uncanny Valley evolved into a record label that assembles acclaimed artists from the electronic music scene not only from the label’s base in Dresden but also from Germany and beyond. With a strong emphasis on the records’ artwork the label heads Philipp Demankowski, Conrad Kaden, Carl-Johannes Schulze and Albrecht Wassersleben are constantly on a mission to establish and refine the artists from the roster as well as to search for new talents. Artists as Jacob Korn, Cuthead, Credit 00, Massimiliano Pagliara, CVBox or Panthera Krause all feel at home on the label, giving them the chance to develop projects that are not only music related but can also integrate different art forms. With the two offshoots Rat Life and shtum under its belt, Uncanny Valley does not stand still to explore the full spectrum of electronic and not so electronic music from House via Disco, Hip-Hop or Ambient through to Techno. A range that can also be depicted when the four label heads come together for a DJ set as Uncanny Valley Soundsystem.
