Mannequin Records is proud to present a 2xLP compilation of System 01, the legendary techno project of Johnny Klimek & Paul Browse.

Moving from acid basslines, 808/909 minimalistic reminiscences and hidden movie samples, the core of the compilation is covering Johnny and Paul whole activity as System 01, spanning from their 1990 debut EP "From Psychodelics To Cybernetics" on Interfisch with Timothy Leary, father of the LSD generation, to 1994, with the release of their most acclaimed album "Drugs Work" on Tresor, naturally placing them in the "Der Klang Der Familie".

For the artwork we thought it was a good idea to contact the legendary Ian Anderson from The Designers Republic, who made the original 'Drugs Work' artwork. The British graphic design studio based in Sheffield are best known for electronic music logos and album artwork for Warp Records, having designed the most iconic releases of Aphex Twin and Autechre.

The story of System 01 starts way before the early 90's, and precisely in the early 80's, when Melbourne-born producer/bassist Johnny Klimek achieved worldwide chart success after a move to Berlin, with an act called ‘The Other Ones’, which included his brother Alf and twin sister Jayney Klimek.

In the years that followed Johnny set up his own production studio in Berlin, and together with Paul Browse went on to infiltrate the electronic music scene with System 01 and Effective Force, with releases on Interfisch/Tresor.

Founder member of the Sheffield cult group Clock DVA, Paul Browse, feeling that this body of work could not be topped, left in 1989 both Clock Dva and England, in favour of Berlin, to start a new life and to continue his occult research. The high point and most successful experiments of his period with Clock Dva can be heard on the album "Buried Dreams".

After a short period of quarantine, Paul was welcomed into Berlin's underground research network, meeting Johnny and embarking himself on a series of joint adventures with the city's most dedicated and driven. Together they established the new sound of Berlin. Moments later the Berlin Wall fell.

In fact, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, unused areas and buildings were ready to be filled with new life all over Berlin, with both parts East and West conquering new open and unclaimed spaces. Clubs, galleries, studios and studios emerge - often only for a few weeks. Berlin will soon be the epicenter of a new culture, attracting thousands of fans from all over the world.

In meantime Johnny Klimek started a side-career, touring in Europe with the Nina Hagen Band as bass player, which would later lead to writing and co-producing her next album in collaboration with Reinhold Heil.

In that same year a partnership with director/composer Tom Tykwer and Reinhold Heil was established, being a 3-piece production team dedicated to the output of film scores, beginning with the 1997 film "Winter Sleepers" and following with ‘Run Lola Run’, which incidentally is the most successful German film in the US since ‘Das Boot’.

After many successfull soundtrack features, including among the others 'Cloud Atlas' - nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score - and Romero's 'Land Of The Dead', Johnny is the composer of the 4th movie of the Matrix saga, 'Matrix Resurrections', due to be released on 18th December 2021.

Little is known about Konstantin Tschechow, the first and last time we met was around the turn of the millennium in the small city of Koenigsbrueck in the far east of Germany. It was during one of my regular night strolls through the countryside, when I ran into him accidentally. He was standing there in the middle of nowhere leaning on the fence of a train yard where he was, as he said "recording silence". I found that very interesting and we got to talk to each other. After a long conversation about everybody and his dog we found out that we were both Grandsons of Afrika Bambaataa. We planned to hang out more often so we exchanged phone numbers and he gave me a CDR with some of his recordings before he disappeared. A couple of weeks later I called him up to ask if we could meet, but he told me that he had to leave the country because the local authorities found out that he illegally immigrated from Aldebaran. Before I could say "to hell with this fascist state!!!" the connection was interrupted. I tried to call again, but he must have dumped his phone to make sure nobody could track him down. That was the last time I ever heard from him. A few years ago, there were rumors of him being the sound man for reincarnated John Lennon on various tours around Galaxy Mt23, unfortunately I could never afford tickets to find out. One lucky day in 2015 I found the CDR that he gave me on our first and only meeting ever. I discovered 5 tracks and instructions to release them in the year 2016 during a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. It was probably only a matter of time until eclectic producer and Mannequin label founder Alessandro Adriani would join up with Stroboscopic Artefacts, since both are heavily invested in taking electronic music listeners outside of their comfort zone and into a world of unpredictable outcomes. Adriani’s debut EP for the label, Enter the Fire, is the first evidence of a new mutation in the Stroboscopic DNA, as can be seen by a shift in Ignazio Mortellaro’s design work for the label (it is in keeping with the previous horticultural theme of the records, but now features directly scanned objects - in this case a single leaf features on the cover). 

Adriani’s work has appeared at a time when, even as electronic music continues to expand into all kinds of new territories, many still associate its signature sounds (analog synthesis, quantized percussion etc.) exclusively with the time in which they first began to make a significant cultural impact. Fortunately, innovators like Adriani ignore this belief that sounds must remain harnessed to a specific point in human history: his attitude towards music making is that the changing circumstances of our environments always have the potential to put a fresh spin on the sounds associated with a previous time and place. In other words, he does not cater to any conceptions of “retro” or dreams of future past. His curriculum vitae as a producer, event organizer, and label owner all comes back to this ethos of getting beyond the “museum exhibit” mentality to music and keeping it vital in the here and now.

The music on Enter the Fire will not disappoint fans of the hard-edged, aerodynamic style that Adriani has perfected over the years: his skillful distillation of the most impactful elements from genres like EBM, acid, darkwave and industrial is on display the moment that the needle lands upon the grooves of the opening track “He Who Harnesses The Souls”. The track’s cycling sense of urgency builds as one hectic sequence is screened on top of the other, with the topmost layer providing a gorgeous melodic sheen to it all. This is followed up with “Rituals (707 EBM Version)” a tense martial stomp designed around a classically effective sequence of 16th notes and brusing kick drum. As these elements intensify the feeling of inhuman discipline through a series of flanging and filtering techniques, chilly phantom noises hint at a state of profound mental and physical exhaustion. 

The B-side shows that music with sheer bionic strength it isn’t the only card Adriani has to play, either within his repertoire as a whole or on this single slab of vinyl. It kicks off with a (relatively speaking!) more contemplative version of “Rituals,” a deviously designed mirage of shifting audio sands in which many different elements (i.e. some hesitant guitar figures, wordless vocalizations) come into view but remain tantalizingly out of reach. The program’s conclusion, “Astronomy”, evokes something more like the cultivated patience of a private investigator on a stakeout (one who is, of course, equipped with all necessary means of technological surveillance). Continuous high-frequency tones, magnified sections of surface noise, and a multitude of other encoded signals all descend on the listener and like a sort of dub music for the ‘peak information’ age.

Starting as a label that served basically as a platform for their friends’ music in 2010, Uncanny Valley evolved into a record label that assembles acclaimed artists from the electronic music scene not only from the label’s base in Dresden but also from Germany and beyond. With a strong emphasis on the records’ artwork the label heads Philipp Demankowski, Conrad Kaden, Carl-Johannes Schulze and Albrecht Wassersleben are constantly on a mission to establish and refine the artists from the roster as well as to search for new talents. Artists as Jacob Korn, Cuthead, Credit 00, Massimiliano Pagliara, CVBox or Panthera Krause all feel at home on the label, giving them the chance to develop projects that are not only music related but can also integrate different art forms.
