It's no secret that we love vinyl here at Uncanny Valley. So we didn't have to think long when Alex Ketzer asked the label to take part in his Beyond Plastic project, a mixtape in book format about artists and vinyl labels that press music on “black gold”. And there will be a CD with music from these labels that will be included with the book. Alex spent more than one year on the road to visit his favourite labels and “vinyl instititutions” in their everyday surroundings. Besides Uncanny valley the book includes interviews and articles of 60Hertz, Smallville, Liebe*Detail, Pingipung, Acker Records, Decks.de, De:Bug, Giegling, Brothers in Love, Dubplates & Mastering, Aim Vinyl, Fauxpas Musik, Oye Records, Ortloff, Kann, Rand Muzik, Freude am Tanzen and Workshop. Of course there is a 12-Inch compilation that will be released in addition to the book project. Among the artists is our very own Sandrow M. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴/𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴?
I started practicing DJing at the end of 2015, and had my first real gig in early 2017. I got Ableton in 2019, but didn’t get to spend a lot of time with it until the pandemic. So, it’s been 10 years (!) since I started DJing this year, and 5 years since I started producing.

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲/𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼?
I think there were several tracks, but two tracks that stand out for techno specifically are Rrose’s Waterfall and Blawan’s Vibe Decorium. I remember being blown away when I first heard them on YouTube. They're still among my favorite producers, and I play those tracks quite regularly.

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆?
As soon as the first rays of sun hit, I get sucked into late 1960s and early 1970s music.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲?
I’m a huge nerd when it comes to fashion and fashion history. I actually wanted to work in fashion as a kid/teen before I got sucked into music. I must say, for creativity, fashion is still my biggest source of inspiration. I really admire the crafts of sewing, designing, and working with fabric. Of course, like in any creative industry, there are plenty of things to be critical about as well, but the creativity and world-building behind certain fashion shows or editorials is magic to me.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗝𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀?
Specifically for DJing, I’d say go to clubs early, see how a club night evolves, and learn what makes a good flow for the night/event. Listen to a lot of opening sets to learn how to build up a set. It takes time to learn what it’s like to play on a club sound system, so opening sets are great for easing into it. If you can do a good opening set, you can definitely slam it out later during the night. That said, this might be a hot take, but I think DJing should start as your hobby, and could then eventually turn into your job. If mixing, digging, collecting, or deep diving into music isn’t something you’d do if you weren’t paid for it, it’ll be hard to stick with it. Try not to monetize your hobbies right from the start.

Simpler Times Mix 001: David - A Long Way To Go

Medicine 8 are back. The project of brothers Liam and Luke May started around 30 years ago in their South London stomping ground.

Their sound, which blended electro and acid house with rock sensibilities, saw the pair release a healthy string of records all the way through to the late noughties, along with a handful of remixes for the likes of Orbital, Manic Street Preachers, Nirvana and pop royalty Kylie Minogue.

Medicine 8 has been lying dormant over the last decade but Liam and Luke have been keeping themselves busy in the interim. As well as running Trashmouth Records - the label responsible for bringing you Fat White Family, MEATRAFFLE and Warmduscher - the pair have been keeping the hardware dream alive with Decius, the sleazy acid house outfit they founded alongside Paranoid London’s Quinn Whalley and Lias Saudi, long running label mate and frontman of the Fat Whites.

In April the duo marked their first new music since 2016 with a remix of May Lavie’s ‘The Poem’ for our R$N sub-label Human Endeavour. The request from label boss Rosie Ama has now jerked the project back into action and, since the release of the remix, the pair have got back in the studio under the moniker and are now giving Decius tracks a Medicine 8 make over. Looks like this won’t be the last we’ll be seeing of the project…

To celebrate this triumphant return, boy have we got a treat for you. Luke and Liam have kindly put together a two-hour long 100% Medicine 8 production mix, packed with tracks from the archive, unreleased music, banging remixes and new releases...

Eletun Selona – In Memoriam (Tribute Mix)

Somewhere between tape hiss and transmission error, Pentagrams Of Discordia have been quietly assembling fragments of forgotten broadcasts, reel-to-reel experiments, and dusty rhythm boxes into something that might resemble a memory. 

The elusive trio work collectively, in analog shadows, and their fingerprints are embedded deep within this mix. Much of the material you’ll hear is unreleased- looped, spliced, and sequenced exclusively for this set. It's both a showcase and an enigma; a sound that nods towards certain iconic duos and chill-room auteurs without ever tipping fully into homage.

Their isolatedmix is the kind of journey that begins with no particular destination, meandering across shortwave frequencies, roadside daydreams, and the occasional flickering motel sign. A collage of found melodies, distorted lullabies, and cracked-lens nostalgia - less a DJ set and more a shared hallucination.

For this month’s episode, we’re thrilled to welcome Elsa, a fresh talent steadily making her mark in the scene. In this mix, she delivers something slightly different from her usual sound, yet perfectly aligned with the vision of Altrove.
A masterfully crafted set that evolves with fluidity, shifting moods while maintaining a coherent flow and a strong, consistent sound aesthetic.

"In this mix, I wanted to explore a part of my collection that I rarely play out - bass-heavy, atmospheric tunes in the 80/160bpm range. It’s music I really love, even if it doesn’t often fit into my usual sets. Was fun messing around with pitch too - slowing fast tracks down, speeding others up, and seeing how they blend."

Elsa, hailing from Basel, Switzerland, discovered her love for electronic music early on. While studying music in school, she began experimenting with digital production. It wasn’t long before she joined the DJ collective and label SchanzeAcht, on which she released her first EP in 2022. Since then, she’s played gigs across Switzerland, Germany and France and released on labels like Pressure Dome, Common Ancestors and Companion.

Starting as a label that served basically as a platform for their friends’ music in 2010, Uncanny Valley evolved into a record label that assembles acclaimed artists from the electronic music scene not only from the label’s base in Dresden but also from Germany and beyond. With a strong emphasis on the records’ artwork the label heads Philipp Demankowski, Conrad Kaden and Carl-Johannes Schulze are constantly on a mission to establish and refine the artists from the roster as well as to search for new talents. Artists as Jacob Korn, Cuthead, Credit 00, Massimiliano Pagliara, CVBox or Panthera Krause all feel at home on the label, giving them the chance to develop projects that are not only music related but can also integrate different art forms.
