Coming across quality producers isn’t always easy. 

Whilst we do our best to search far and wide for great talent, it’s not often that we have the right artists come to us. 

One of the winners of our remix competition in early 2020, Ryo Odagawa delivered a spectacular remix of Subp Yao’s “Backwitda”. Producing under the moniker Fetus, the 21-year-old prodigy lives in Osaka, Japan and is fast becoming a recognised name in the Japanese Drum and Bass scene. His tune, Black Glass, was unearthed recently on our annual Lunar New Year-themed, “The Year of the Ox” compilation, and was incredibly well-received. 

We’re now excited to be releasing his debut EP “Dark Monkey” along with Black Barrel’s stamp of approval with his remix of “Tar 11mg.” 

The five-track release is a little goldmine of tunage that is yet another chapter in Fetus’s unfolding gritty narrative as an electronic musician and showcases the absurd lucidity of every note and sonic stride he takes. 

The opening track “Tar 11mg” leads as the EP’s atmospheric rolling Drum’n’Bass belter with a soulful yet sinister touch. Half-time tracks “Depth” and “Dark Monkey” are both sublimely wonky yet punctured with club hungry industrial energy and sophisticated sound design. 

“BOO” is an energetic 160 breakbeat trip with hints of electro, clinical vocal stabs and other elements best just listened to - we won’t bother defining which boundary this tune crosses - fuck it! 

For the EP’s dirty remix flip we invited Russian boss and long-time Unchained supporter Black Barrel. Known for being able to make dance-floor bangers whilst hungover, blindfolded, using only a kebab and a small collection of broken watch parts, expect faces to get very unattractive when this remix drops.

The Italian DNB scene has gone through numerous waves of growth over the year, supported by a few inspirational and dedicated crews with strong roots in original rave culture.

Rikki Calliari, aka Frame, is a unique part of this growth wave and the ever evolving bass movement in Europe. As a DJ, producer and co-founder of Rude Sound, Frame has seen a plethora of releases across multiple labels that span the diverse frontiers of bass - including The Dreamers, Delta9 and Influenza Media.

We are therefore excited to welcome Frame into the Unchained famiglia, with his debut release on the label, the Arabic Gum EP.

Centring around quirky danceability, the title track’s middle eastern flavours raise an otherwise menacing dark steppa into an exquisite blend of hypnotic drum and bass, followed closely by an even weightier smooth roller, Blonde or Brunette. Good Feeling arrives just in time for summer with uplifting synths paired with cheeky horn samples and hefty subs. Then, In My Mind, Frame reworks the 90s Jungle sound complete with minimal amen breaks, vocal stand and rave funk balanced by clinical production.

Definitely a well crafted serving on our 2021 menu, We really hope you like this one!

Wrong Dance EP

Miso & Fuj - Overgrown

Finnish producers Juho Kavasto and Sainey Gibba, more commonly known as Askel & Elere, are back with a bang. Their first single of the year ‘Get Up / Nothing More (feat. YENIAS)’ in February threw shoes, turned heads and warmed hearts, receiving support from UKF. Since that release, the pair have been working diligently together on their debut album. This techy, futuristic piece of sci-fi liquid is titled ‘Simulations’ and is set for release on the 29th of October. 

The final single ‘Eclipse’ is a wonderfully weird and experimental journey into the world of acid techno, familiarly framed in a 160bpm context. This break from the d&b norm really highlights the versatility and intelligence these two young producers possess, and tees up the album in perfect fashion. These pulsing, progressive sounds land in all good stores on the 22nd of October 2021.

There are very few artists that can say that they were there at the birth of the Drum & Bass era. Even fewer can claim to have helped shape the genre and played their part in influencing and evolving the sound - Shodan is one of those few.

In the mid-noughties, a revolution was happening in Drum & Bass that was inspired by a shift from analogue to digital equipment. It was at this time in 2004 that Shodan's ability to construct basslines with the first wave of DAWs caught the attention of DJ Phantasy - a producer with whom a strong and creative partnership would be formed.

ater that year saw Shodan's first release for Easy Records alongside DJ Phantasy and Fatman D, "No Liars". This along with "Atomic Age" propelled Shodan into the limelight, and but a few releases later came the epic rework of Top Buzz's "Living In Darkness". But it was a release on DJ Hype's Ganja Records that cemented Shodan's place in DnB history.

"Gimme Da Gal" was arguably one of the seminal tracks of the decade and launched Shodan into the hearts and minds of fans and peers alike. Before long, the remixes were coming thick and fast for the likes of Aphrodite as well as releases for Trouble On Vinyl and a collab with UK Apache entitled "I Say, You Say" - all of which showcased a versatility that was rare for the genre. But after a few more releases and a foray into other forms of music yielded a killer combo with Offkey called "Boogie Down" on Pure Filth Records, Shodan took a sabbatical.

Fast forward to 2018 and the fire burns bright once more, and a host of releases are already lined up for one of the most welcome comebacks of the modern era.

Heavyweights such as Celsius Recordings have already shown support for Shodan’s return, along with Ten Tons Deeper, Influenza Media and DJ Marky’s new label project RSTLSSNSS all planning releases in Q2 2018.

With a focus on the deeper, more soulful side of the Drum & Bass spectrum, Shodan is an artist reborn.

We’re proud to present the next instalment of the Dispatch Blueprints series from the legendary Ink & Gremlinz. Writing music together for almost 3 decades, they have pioneered their own take on drum and bass and so they make the perfect pairing to continue the Blueprints ethos, presenting their take on classic, old skool sounds with contemporary production techniques.

‘Juno Dawn’ is a tribute to the ‘atmospheric’ tracks heard at legendary clubs like ‘Speed’. It is a direct reference to Ink’s own ARX (Architecture Recordings) sound and style, a seven minute journey through the depths of these emotive and imaginative soundscapes.

In contrast ‘Faceless’ is a nod to the ’Horsemen’ sound that Ink & Gremlinz have been part of for many years – created originally by The 4 Horsemen (Ink, Loxy, Dylan and Keaton) this tough and rolling sound found home on labels like Renegade Hardware and Metalheadz – primarily focusing on b-boy break beats, with those deep tribal and tech elements that continue throughout, developing in a continual roll out.
