Pieced together by the curator of Unchained Mix Series, Just Bee, this mix is dedicated to all the amazing ladies who have contributed to the drum & bass scene with their music production, voices and stories.

This mix is a mini constellation of some of the most talented women in the drum & bass scene from different corners of the globe. These ladies are more than just music producers and vocalists; they are storytellers and vibe-creators who work incredibly hard and bravely to share with us a piece of themselves. Some of the voices in these tunes have soothed and uplifted me in times when I have not been so strong, some puts me in a good mood without fail and some tracks are for pure screw-face purposes…I could go on and on 🙂 I hope everyone will enjoy this special mix, plus there’s a little sneak peek of what’s to come on Unchained Recordings 😈

Unchained Mix Series 037 by Just Bee (Hong Kong)

"There's an idea in electronic music that the more esoteric, darker, percussive tunes that many artists find themselves falling deeper into as they develop their craft, myself included, are not for or loved by the masses. This is not an idea, I share. While I've been on a journey for over 10 years since first touching a set of decks, becoming borderline obsessed with these tunes; the constant digging for forward-thinking music led me to discover labels like Unchained. Since developing a palate for the style you'll find in my mix, the idea that it's difficult or even obscure sometimes prevents me from dropping a full D&B/Juke/Footwork set at my residency sets in my city.
That's why for me and the listeners, a label like Unchained is so important. Bringing straight to people's ears the music I want to play, and they want to hear even if they don't know it yet. There's no such thing as artist or scene only music. I've tested it on unexpecting ears, it slaps. Hold tight Unchained; giving me the opportunity to showcase the music that I'm genuinely passionate about."

Shannon is a DJ, writer, and podcaster based in New York City. Previously she owned CREAM Club in Chongqing, China, and has spent the last 5 years touring throughout Asia. Currently, Shannon hosts the Club Management Podcast where she chats with artists and music industry execs about how they are changing their communities through music. The show has featured some amazing conversations with guests including Chicago Footwork legend TRAXMAN, TYGAPAW, the Jersey Club queen UNIIQU3 and Ray Barney who is the founder of legendary Chicago House Music label Dance Mania.

Unchained Mix Series 039 by Shannon (US)

Mars Kasei is a producer, DJ and vocalist based in Oakland, California. Mars is inspired heavily by fast beats and global underground club music. Mars infuses her tracks with atmospheric vocals and melodic sequences while also including persuasive bass elements reflective of the music in the underground that inspires her. She recently released a track with Deeplinkin, “DarkWhite” on Worst Behavior and also featured on a track, “Mars” with Qrion on Anjunadeep. Mars has self released most of her EPs and has a new EP coming out on Samsara Beats this year. Mars Kasei’s mix features some of her favorite artists and friends globally in bass/club music while including a few of her own tracks as well.

Mojo provides an energetic mix, showcasing what talented producers are able to do with a nice break. In the mix he blends breakbeat, with electro and jungle. He makes good use of old school sounds such as acid, classic rave stabs, tape delays and the amen break. Along the old school he got new school interpretations of the older sound. Mojo likes forward thinking music and good mixdowns, with an old school touch. Thats why we think his mix enriches our guestmix palette.

Unchained Mix Series 041 by Mojo (DE)

Whilst a well-known force in underground bass in New Zealand for some time, Paige Julia is now being embraced by the global music community as one of the very profound artists emanating from the south pacific island’s thriving Drum and Bass scene. 

In the run up to her Dreams EP out on Unchained this June, we asked Paige to put together a special mix for us. Packed with plenty of her own dubs, this is a rich selection of both the elegant and tastefully dirty end of jungle, half-time and drum'n'bass.

Unchained Mix Series 042 by Paige Julia (NZ)

王若迷 (Wong Yeuk Mai) hails from Hong Kong and grew up on the front row of nu-metal band shows and has deep roots in heavy-weight music. Her musical taste was shaped by the early days of attending Psychedelic Trance gatherings by Psyonic Boom in 2013 and DnB nights by Heavy Hong Kong. After listening to lots of bass music she was inspired to DJ in 2014; from then on she has been keeping herself busy with gigs.

王若迷's specialty is Hi-Tech at 180bpm+. Her selection aim was to first make herself dance, but now the new direction in recent days is to express more of her musical tastes.

Her heavy and naughty style is well received in the Hong Kong underground DnB and psytrance scene - there are no signs of stopping for 王若迷.

Bad Habitz is the next fresh and big talent to emerge out of Cheshire, North West of the UK. After following the scene for over a decade and touching down at hundreds of raves across the globe, she decided to step up behind the decks and show everyone what she's capable of.

The high energy and precise mixing executed by Bad Habitz has brought her to drop fire on fire sets in Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham, Stoke, Preston, Macclesfield, & Congleton in the UK and is definitely one to watch out for. Unchained Mix Series 022 by Bad Habitz (UK)

KIRA was born in Poland with Russian and Ukrainian roots, before moving to the UK where she discovered a love for electronic music and rave culture. KIRA's specialty is the dark, minimal and grotty sounds of drum and bass inspired by artists such as Alix Perez, Halogenix, Skeptical and Bredren. She was initially intimidated by her surrounding male peers who were all into production and mixing, but she overcame her fears and let her love for the music guide her to the decks.

Since then, her knowledge and musical exploration has led to multiple opportunities and personal achievements including supporting Alix Perez, playing at Red Bull UK’s Open House, Enter & Drumfunk, and being booked for Outlook Festival 2019 and SUBU Summer Ball.

From hearing electronic music for the first time at age 13 to being signed to Metalheadz with the first track she made with partner in crime Quadrant, Iris is a force to be reckoned with in her own right. She has released on many prestigious labels such as CIA, Commercial Suicide, Dispatch and Hospital Records. Along with an ever-growing arsenal of original productions plus dubs, Iris' diverse music repertoire and skills behind the decks is not a hidden fact as she actively puts out new mixes and streams with no signs of stopping. Mentored by one of the geniuses of the Portuguese Bass scene, the wonderful late Razat, RIP, Carlos Salgueiro, producing under the moniker Dead End, has come from deep hip-hop roots to passionately embrace what has been labelled as the ‘future sound’ of Bass music. Tasteful pallets of abstract, ethereal structures, raw powered-up bass movements and artfully composed, but heavy as fuck, beats are just some of the ingredients. Since founding her brand ‘Lucid Juice’ in 2019, Gina has curated hefty lineups across multiple genres of electronic music with huge success. Her passion for high energy bass driven sounds has inspired her to venture into DJing where she incorporates a mixture of dubstep, footwork & jungle into her regular sets on Subtle Radio. Unchained Mix Series 033 by Ravenface86 (China)

Known by many as an enigmatic eccentric, Paleblu is the moniker of Ryan Gonsalves, a 24 year old multi-genre artist hailing from East London. His passion for music began at the young age of 15 as an MC at drum & bass raves at the legendary club Cable and in the London warehouse party scene. Beginning from an early age has led him to host various sets as an MC at label nights including RAM Records, Hospital Records, Soulvent Records, Lifestyle Music, Cyberfunk & many more. He has been a member of Reprezent Radio family since 2016 playing host to a number of high profile guests including Ray Keith, Breakage, Cyantific, Chords, MC Rage - to name a few. Each release is different spanning different genres and mediums from indie hip-hop, dnb production and everything else in between. His projects touch on his various talents such as lyricism, songwriting and production. His first full length hip-hop project Bagged & Bruised was released in 2018. At the age of 23 he has played across the UK at leading London venues such as Printworks, XOYO and Fabric. Not to mention several performances at UK and European festivals including Secret Garden Party, Lovebox, Meadows In The Mountains (Bulgaria) and Hospitality On The Beach (Croatia). His diverse sets touch on his wide array of musical and technical talents from DJ sets, MC sets to live sets with a full band. An artist with no boundaries and someone who doesn't like to pigeonhole himself - Paleblu is one of the new wave of artists emerging from London.

Her performance credits – both solo and as part of D&B power trio Nuance – include Shogun Audio, Overview, Free From Sleep, Skankandbass, (with a forthcoming appearance at Hospitality on the Beach 2021) supporting artists such as Ulterior Motive, Technimatic, Insideinfo, Pola & Bryson and Arkaik along the way.

Unchained Mix Series 035 by Averse (UK)

Hunter was around 11 years old when he started listening to drum and bass, firstly listening to artists such as Pendulum, AMC, Netsky and Shy Fx. He began to develop an ever growing love for this music and started a mission to expand his library wider and wider, discovering other genres such as jump up and neurofunk.

6 years later, he decided to buy his first set of decks and start trying to learn how to mix himself. Over the coming years, the passion grew more and more and different genres such as minimal, dark, rollers and steppers started to emerge into his music library and mixes. The urge to learn more about djing became too much leading to bunking college to go and mix and spending his every last penny on buying more advanced music equipment to try and improve as a DJ.

Ever since, he has worked endlessly each day constantly adding new tracks, transitons, mixing techniques and general knowledge to his arsenal, taking inspiration from artists such as Voltage, Serum, Alix Perez, K Jah, Cabin Fever, Bladerunner, Randall, Die and many many more.
