Born on August 25, 1911, in Quảng Bình Province, Giáp's early life was marked by his passion for anti-colonial activism. He joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1931 and rose to prominence during World War II as the military leader of the Việt Minh resistance against Japanese occupation. His most celebrated victory came at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954, where his forces decisively defeated the French, ending colonial rule in Southeast Asia.

Giáp's military genius extended into the Vietnam War, where he orchestrated key offensives, including the Tet Offensive in 1968. Despite stepping down as commander in 1972, he remained a pivotal figure in Vietnam's defence and political landscape until his retirement3.

His legacy is not only one of military brilliance but also of resilience and dedication to his nation's independence. Giáp passed away on October 4, 2013, at the age of 102, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations. A man who truly loved his people and fought for its freedom.
