WE BE ECHO 'Ceza Evi - Compleat Edition' (CSR311CD)

Occupying a halfway point between Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire without ever quite sounding like either, We Be Echo is Kevin Thorne.

Thorne's first foray into music came after a chance meeting with Throbbing Gristle on Tottenham Court Road in 1979. A few months later he met Raye Calouri at the legendary Throbbing Gristle / Cabaret Voltaire / Rema Rema gig at Central YMCA, London. Soon after, the duo formed the short-lived Third Door From The Left. After the demise of TDFTL, Thorne formed We Be Echo. 

The debut album "Ceza Evi" - featuring GENESIS P-ORRIDGE and IHAM on Tibetan Thigh-bone Trumpet - was released in June 1983, followed by a special edition later the same year, originally available only to readers of Nanavesh. 

The music was recorded using the built-in microphone on a dual cassette recorder, then the next layer was recorded whilst playing the first tape back. Very lo-fi, no editing, no remixing, all spontaneous and raw. As with Third Door From The Left, who recorded in the same way, it all just seemed to fall into place. 

Compleat Edition: Disc one contains the original tracks for the "Ceza Evi" special edition release. The remaining tracks on disc 2 are from the original cassette release of "Ceza Evi", plus bonus tracks recorded between 1981-1983. Briefly pushing We Be Echo back into the light, a handful of these tracks appeared on the 2009 compilation "Decades" (Vinyl On Demand). Now, bringing together all these tracks for the first time ever, this "Compleat Edition" cements "Ceza Evi" as one of the most important underground releases of the early 80's. To do it real justice, this release was mastered by Attrition's Martin Bowes.

"We Be Echo, as represented on the bed-wettingly fine Cesa Evi cassette, were a musical refinement of the organised chaos of TDFTL. The rhythm programming shows an increased complexity, lending tension to the bass and keyboard components. In place of vocals there are deftly-manipulated speech recordings, providing a thematically provocative narrative to the tracks. Speech and sounds are juxtaposed, edited and repeated, in or out of context, to great effect. Many others have tried similar things (often with access to superior equipment) but few succeed so well as We Be Echo...  if you have an inquiring mind and a discriminating ear they are worthy of your attention. In particular the quality and sophistication of this music" (The Sound Projector).

Obwigszyh returns to Exiles after releasing Personal Data in 2020, an album on which he was conditioned by the isolation suffered during the first months of confinement due to Covid-19. However, the Hungarian producer had debuted on the label a year earlier, sharing a release with his partner and fellow producer Normál Tamás. Obwigszyh, in addition to working as a DJ and producer, is also co-founder, together with Normál Tamás and Adam Krasz, of Műhely, a platform that operates as an artists' collective and also, since 2018, as a record label.

We can observe a significant shift between Shards, Obwigszyh's last album, and Personal Data. Musically, Personal Data is a heterogeneous work in which the author shows great creative skill, as each track has its own storyline and does not rely on a connection with the rest of the cuts, but rather is engendered from a unique mood. With Shards, Obwigszyh is more introspective, the author himself says that with this album he intends to escape from the world and any unnecessary stimuli, relaxing body and mind until the passage of time manages to erase all existence.

Beit Dajan was mentioned in the Old Testament by Beth Dagon. During the Assyrian period, the village was known by Bit Daganna, and the Romans called it Keparada gon.

The village, located on a sandy hill on the central coastal plain, lay at the intersection of the Jaffa-al-Ramla highway with the coastal highway that went south to Gaza. It was slightly to the south of the Jaffa-Jerusalem highway. It was situated 9 km southwest of Jaffa.

Beit Dajan had two elementary schools: the 1st was an elementary school for boys in 1920 and it had an enrollment of 353 boys in 1945; the 2nd school was for girls and it had an enrollment of 102 girls in 1945.

The Ummayyad Caliph Hisham ibn 'Abd al-Malik (A.D. 724- 743) built a palace in the village, and also the Crusades built a castle known by Casal Maen.

There are four settlements on village lands: Beyt Dagan, which was established in the site six months after the conquest of Bayt Dajan in April 1948, Mishmar ha-Shiv'a, built in 1949, Chemed, built in 1950, and Gannot, built in 1953.

German industrial radicals MDS51 grace us with a new release for Strange Therapy. The 10-track cassette Sickness and Ruins consists 3 new cuts, 3 tracks previously released only on CD, and some live-tracks recorded on Wroclaw Industrial Festival in November 2018.

DNA is a death-factory made music, an industrial inferno with distorted rhythms and sharp lines, conjuring a thundering crescendo of obsessive nature. The majestic atmosphere is enriched by well-placed samples and screams, recalling a tension akin to a real horrific experience. Tunnel is a static attack with subtle distorted motifs with a hidden melody, endorsed by a mechanical rhythm upon which female shouted vocals are layered. The track grows into a hypnotizing movement with seductive passages, while keeping its menacing soul. Torn showcases grinding lines and orchestral dark ambiances, reaching a film-score structured with sudden stark percussions and mesmerizing motifs. A dystopian sci-fi atmosphere dominates the number, while sparse vocal samples enrich the track with an almost narrative quality. Death-industrial moments surprise us with distorted vocals and steady paths. LCF is a noisescape made of hellish distortions and a stomping drum, interrupted by alarming screams. An old-school industrial atmosphere permeates the episode, conjuring a new steel-like obsession, and during the second half hateful vocals complete the climax. Fear Reactor is a destructive affair made of abrasive distortions and the usual well-placed samples, soon reached by strong rhythmic patterns and declaiming shouted vocal deliveries. Grinding moments with a crawling movement characterized by a broken structure. Pendu employs minimal elements and suspended atmospheres upon which a crooning voice layers its dark secrets. A sharp affair with an eerie sense of danger, a well-crafted industrial-pastiche ends the A side.

Propagation is the first of the 4 live tracks and welcomes us to the B-side. This track is a raw rendition with an almost punk feeling, a compulsive motion with steady cymbals and imperative vocal samples. The industrial march knows no pause, delivering some furious crescendos. Monochrom showcases minimal droning structures and rhythmic mantras with a serpentine nature. Then, shouted vocals enrich the track with a soulful performance. WHM is a percussive affair with sudden burst of noise and stomping beats, a menacing soundscape which grows with the continuous adding of elements. During the second half it sees riffing sounds and a starker drumming. Enfer ends the cassette with cinematic undertones with ritualistic rhythms and seductive female vocals in French. A dark crescendo shows itself among the crawling movement, keeping a restrained tension never really climaxing.
