When I once found work as a mime in New York (it was the nineties—anything was possible), I had a problem with rodents in my place. There was an unused basement in my apartment building, so I started tossing them in there rather than kill them outright.

After a while, I got to feeling bad about their living conditions, so I
installed running water and heat. Later, I started feeding them as much as I
could afford to, and even repainted down there. I figured they were getting
bored, so I put in some exercise wheels, a small pool, and even a couple
water-slides!

By and by, I learned that other mimes (a common occupation at that
time in New York) had solved their rodent problem in this way, and built
special basements like mine. Some of them had even gotten a little bit
competitive, and started a ranking system. The top ten were put on a list which was updated every week.

Before long, I too caught the fever—and with hard work and dedication I
eventually ended up at the top of... 'The New York Mimes’ Pest-Cellar List'.
